During the past 50 years design research theories have cast light on the concept of ‘design’. Since this is a complicated, abstract concept, it needs appropriate conceptual and methodological frameworks in order to clarify the multifaceted, complex aspects of this human act. Among more important contemporary epistemological theories is the ‘conceptual metaphor’ theory, which has also been welcome in design research circles. Scrutinising design research’s two main paradigms, namely, ‘rational problem solving’ and ‘reflection in action’, one can find the development extended theories thanks to ‘conceptual metaphor’. Whilst the two above paradigms have been undergoing revisions in the past 20 years, various complementary, explanatory metaphors have emerged on the concept of design. The present research focuses on the contents of two creditable early design research publications to select key conceptual metaphors for explaining design concept. Alongside the two above-mentioned paradigms, the most important metaphors include ‘bricolage’, ‘co-evolution’, ‘disclosure’, ‘dialogue’ and ‘play’. In the end a series of graphics illustrate each metaphor, and with them their implicit and explicit aspects of the concept of design in each metaphor. The paper concludes that hermeneutic metaphors i.e. ‘disclosure’, ‘dialogue’, and ‘play’ best suit the clarification of the concept of design, which is due to their proximity with design mechanisms. As such, they are among the most suitable design metaphors for design research.

It demands reflections how to appropriately use daylight considering energy consumption, functions, and students’ and teachers’ performance in educational buildings. An inconsiderate design for windows, shadings and their accessories can result in glare and increased heating loads due to excessive direct sunlight reception or reduced daylight. Having daylight reception and glare control in mind, the present paper studies daylight, glare, and the effects of shading design on visual comfort using on-spot measurements and simulation for classrooms in the Faculty of Architecture and Urban Planning, Shahid Beheshti University. Both static and dynamic indicators have been employed here. The aim is to compare visual comfort conditions in different classes in order to choose suitable indicators. According to results among the studied indices, UDI 300-300(50%) and SVD are more appropriate for daylight and glare evaluations in the design process respectively. The results also show that northeast facing classrooms enjoy the best visual comfort conditions. Moreover, south facing classrooms require moveable shading devices to receive suitable daylight and avoid glare. Meanwhile, the use of fix shading devices to reduce glare is unjustified as they significantly reduce daylight intake.

Socrates was born in 469 BC. He is the founder of the ‘Western Political Philosophy’. In his youth he became interested in philosophy and then he became interested in naturalist philosophy. He was also fascinated by the sophists. But neither the philosophy of naturalism nor the Sophists’ thoughts and ideas could persuade him. Socrates is a thinker who wants to express his views on life, politics, and social relations within the context of citizenship and the rights of citizens, and to state the principles that followed him by his disciples, especially Plato, and through him Aristotle, as the foundations of the idea of utopia. He places everything on the basis of reasonableness and rationality based on ‘human morality’ and by posing ‘the position of man and human morality in society’, he created a turning point in the course of the philosophical thought of the city. He initiated the rational measurement of the concept and ideas in a manner that is systematic. Hence, Socrates in the history of Western thought is a reference; because one can speak of ‘before Socrates’ and ‘after Socrates’ thoughts. The purpose of this article is to explore Socrates’s influential views on what would later be referred to as ‘Utopia’. It includes his personality, the factors influencing the city and the Athenian citizens in his critical views, the philosophical teaching of Socrates, and the evolution of his thoughts. The paper uses a descriptive-analytical study based on documentation and evidence related to Socrates derived from library resources. This exploration shows that the principles of the city and the citizenship of Socrates, as influenced by the times of the city of Athens, can be found in some of the following ways: 1. Wisdom, courage, chastity, justice, Godliness; 2. Virtue and justice, ethics and politics; 3. Goodness and beauty and usefulness of wisdom and knowledge, self-knowledge, awareness and awakening ; 4. Contemplation, exploration; 5. Education, merit, courtesy and bliss; 6. Meritocracy and law and order; 7. The rule of wisdom and rightfulness and justice . These principles affects almost the entire forthcoming utopian thoughts.

Time has always attracted the attention of architecture and urban design theoreticians, but this has always been studied in aesthetic terms. Meanwhile, the lack of attention to time’s effects on the attendability of urban spaces has resulted in people’s reluctance to be present in urban spaces. To put it in contemporary terms, the accelerating urban rhythms have stopped people from unplanned interactions with other people and the environment. The present research identifies the temporal factors effective on attendability, and assesses them in the context of Isfahan’s Hossain Abad district. The methods used include rhythm analysis, spatial layout analysis, field survey, and interviews. The results show that the lack of variety and complexity in spatial and activity structures, incorrect time management, and boring visual landscapes have resulted in a reduced attendability in the district’s public spaces.

Most pedestrian spaces in our cities lack the visual appeal, vividness and landscaping to offer pedestrians any satisfaction. Since the concept of beauty is qualitative and subject to interpretations, and enough has been said about it from theoretical and philosophical points of view, the main challenge here remains in how to measure, assess and apply beauty. One visually encounters a lot of things in local streets. The recreation of the base design is one of the recent approaches to urban design, at whose core lies an applied attention to beauty. People conceive this type of space from a near distance and at low speeds, which naturally brings with it high degrees of attention. As a result, the explanation of aesthetic criteria in the quality of beauty in the design of local streets demands maximal public contribution in order to domesticise the concept and prevent authentic values and domestic identities from being neglected by an elitist mannerism. The present research started with explaining theories and extracting applied aesthetic criteria in five categories. It then went on to examine these on Qazvin’s Shahid Ansari Street in the city’s historic district. This was based on a survey based on observations and questionnaires. To find out how people prioritise the five criteria they were broken into 25 simple qualitative aphorisms in questionnaires, to be analysed later. Of people’s priorities 15 were found to be meaningfully high (ranked above 50%), among which attention to the quality of historic buildings came top (93.6%) followed by attention to domestic culture (85.8%) for designing the local street in question. Least important criteria were considered to be the balance between building heights (56.6%) followed by the harmony between various building components (52.2%), meaning people were feeling less connected to the latter.

Naraq is a town with a long history, which has been in decline since almost a century ago. The town’s bazaar is the most important remaining structure from its glorious past. Despite its Listing, the bazaar has been deteriorating because of the lack of attention and the economic decline; so much that there is now a need for restoration and refurbishment plans to preserve it. Such interventions need an awareness of the structure’s features and characteristics, which, regrettably is yet to be deservedly done. Studies on matters such as how it was formed in connection with its surrounding elements, how it is connected with its context, and what type it is, would help understand its position among other areas of the town such as Upper and Lower districts and their centres, and the northern street and river-valley. The method used is interpretative-historical, and largely based on field studies. Scarce written resources have also been studied. More important documents such as letters of devotion (vaqf nameh) have also been studied to help understand relevant parts of the bazaar and its associated natural and built contexts. Whilst casting light on its physical aspects, the results show that the present remainder of the bazaar was formed in the second half of the 13th (Hijri) century outside the nuclei of the two Upper and Lower districts, along an historic route, turning the transit route into the bazaar’s passageway. The studies also show that the bazaar complex is formed on the town’s northern borders in a way to have suitable connections with the river-valley and the historic Kashan-Dilijan route.

Urmia Jameh mosque is one of the valuable architectural monuments that contains many features of Persian architecture from early Islam until Qajar. Nevertheless, this collection has been neglected and not studied comprehensively until now. Rudimentary analyses based on documentation, evidence, and studies show that the dome chamber of the mosque is related to Seljuk architecture and has a lot of geometrical similarities with other Seljuk examples, but there are noticeable differences which are at the heart of this research. The research attempts to answer questions such as ‘what is the most remarkable characteristic of the structural organisation of Urmia Jameh mosque dome chamber?’, and ‘what are the substantial differences between the structural organisation of this dome chamber and the same contemporaneous structures around Iran?’ In this article, we start with a descriptiveanalytical method, and then move on to an adaptive study phase, using deductive analysis method. The results of this research indicate that this dome chamber is similar to other Seljuk ones in many ways, but in its transitional zone we witnessed a new Patkâné organisation, which is rarely seen in Iranian architecture, with examples from other Islamic countries not being exactly the same.
