This paper examines the important factors in determining inflation and the requirements to achieve single-digit inflation in Iran. For this purpose, this study has implemented the theoretical foundations & empirical studies of inflation, the experience of transition for the countries with high inflation rates, economic conditions of Iran and the appropriate econometric model. As to be expected, to achieve single-digit inflation, budget deficit control policies with an emphasis on cost reduction and increase in tax revenues, controlling the volume of money, privatization, structural reforms, reducing the share of oil production in the country and a national resolution is required. Examining the important factors involved in determining inflation in Iran, and using vector auto regression models, demonstrate that liquidity has the greatest effect on the rate of inflation both in the short and the long run. The other determining factors are budget deficit, tax revenues and GDP growth rate. Based on the estimation model, and assuming the same trend of variables in the past 10 years to be held, the inflation rate for 1394 equals to 23.5%. As a pessimistic scenario, if the same past monetary and fiscal policies are applied, the predicted inflation rate for 1395 will be 41%.

This paper employs a quantitative business cycle approach to study the main causes of recent stagnation in Iran. Four wedges as investment, labor, productivity, and government spending are separately computed in a general equilibrium framework. These wedges, respectively represent the existing frictions in efficiency, labor market, investment and government spending; they are introduced separately or simultaneously in the basic model to specify to what extent each wedges can explain the decline in production, labor force and investment in the period of stagflation in 1390s. The findings indicate that productivity wedges alone can substantially explain the fluctuations in production, investment, and partially labor force; accordingly, the labor force wedge is the major factor in explaining the labor market fluctuations. In effect, the investment and government spending wedges do not have a prominent role in providing the explanation for fluctuations in variables in question and also for the emergence of the recent stagflation.

Export and economic growth are of those economic variables which have parallel behaviors with respect to one another. However there are different views regarding the causality between them. This paper attempts to test the causality between export and economic growth by referring to Dumitrescu and Hurlin (2012) test and data for 91 countries between 1980i-2012. To this end, Granger causality test has been applied in Homogenous Non Causality and Heterogeneous Non Causality methods with panel data. The result does not reject the causal relationship directed from export to economic growth in either methods. Although there is homogeneous causality directing from economic growth to export, but such causality is rejected in Dumitrescu and Hurlin (2012) test. In other words, Heterogeneous Non Causality method rejects the causality relation directing from economic growth to export, therefore such causal direction cannot be generalized to all countries. Accordingly, by separating the subsets of countries in accordance with income category into five groups, the impact of export on economic growth has been estimated by the system of generalized method of moments (GMM-SYS) estimator; this estimation shows that there is a significant positive effect in LI, LMI, UMI, HI and OECD countries and this effect increases in parallel with the increase in income group. Furthermore, the extent to which this effect bears is significantly different across the income groups.

This paper investigates the effects of markup shocks of domestic and export goods prices on macroeconomic variables by using a Dynamic Stochastic General Equilibrium (DSGE) model for Iran, in order to examine the effect of the growth of market power and monopoly in domestic and exporting markets from a macroeconomic viewpoint. To this end, the optimal pricing process of domestic, importing and exporting firms is modeled in Calvo price stickiness (1983) framework, by specifying the dynamic behavior of markup shocks including random walk processes for these shocks. The simulation results and dynamic analysis of shocks show that the positive shock of domestic price markup has a negative significant effect on investment, consumption, domestic marginal cost and production in the short run. On the other hand, a positive shock of the domestic markup has positive and short-run effect on imports and exports. Also, a positive shock of exporting goods price markup decreases the investment, domestic marginal cost, exports and production in short run. Based on the findings of this research, the markup shocks, as one of the causes of the growth of market power and monopoly, have a destructive effect on production, consumption and investment in Iran. Hence, in order to control market power and monopoly, it is necessary to approve and enforce antitrust and anti-monopoly policies and regulations.

Improving income distribution is one of the most important goals of policymakers. Therefore, identifying the effective factors on income distribution and how to influence them in order to improve income distribution is a very essential subject for policymakers. The aim of this paper is to investigate the nonlinear impact of government size on income distribution in the economy of Iran. To this end, a threshold regression has been used for estimating the effective factors of income distribution during 1974-i2012. The estimation results indicate that in small government size regime (when the government size is less than 0.367), increasing government size does not have a significant impact on income inequality but in large government size regime (when the government size is larger than 0.367), increasing government size increases income inequality. Based on the empirical results, in pursuance of improving income distribution in Iran, we suggest that Iran’s government should perform privatization policy or thoroughly execute the article 44 of the constitution more rigorously than it did before.

This study attempts to empirically examine the relationship between the quality of the institutional environment and income inequality. In order to determine the causality and direction of this relationship, a Vector Autoregressive Model (VAR) has been used, and to overcome the limitations pertaining to the data, a panel composed of data from 121 countries has been used and tested; hence, a Panel VAR model (Panel VAR) has been implemented. Civil liberties, political rights, economic freedoms, the risk of countries, six indicators of good governance as institutional indicators, Gini coefficient, and the income ratio of top decile to bottom decile of the population have been considered as the indicators of inequality. According to the results, the inverse relationship between the quality indicators of civil liberties, political rights, economic freedoms, the risk of countries and political stability indices (indices of good governance) with inequality is verified. In other words, the results show that the quality of the institutional environment has positive effects on inequality and poverty, thus better quality institutional environment will lead to less inequality and poverty; in other words, the results indicate that a higher quality of institutional environment will reduce inequality, but there is weak evidence as for the opposite direction for this relationship.

Growth and development of knowledge-based economy is the desired objective for many economies and accomplishing this purpose requires the accurate and comprehensive understanding of the variables involved in this process. The knowledge generated by innovation and technological developments has driven long-term economic development in many countries and many governments have achieved considerable success through the development of Knowledge-based Economy. This paper estimates the impact of good governance indicators on knowledge-based economy development. In this regard, we select 33 countries and try to estimate the impact of components of good governance indicators (voice and accountability, political stability, government effectiveness, regulatory quality, rule of law and control of corruption) on the selected country's knowledge economy using multiple regression. The World Bank statistical databases has been used to collect data and Smart PLS software for estimation and analysis of data. Regression results suggest significant positive impact of good governance as a key variable on the knowledge economy index (KAM) in the selected countries. Furthermore, when we regress the effect of governance sub-indexes, estimated regressions suggest that the effect of the components of rule of law, political stability and control of corruption on the knowledge economy has been stronger compared to other components.

This paper investigates the effect of redistributive politics on the composition of government expenditure. By applying a dynamic and complete information game, it is shown that the quality of institutions is a key determinant of how much the government revenue is spent on public goods. The main finding of this paper is that in democracies with high quality of institution, less transfer is demanded through election period, but when the quality of institutions is low, voters prefer more direct transfer despite the high positive externality of public goods on production (and income), this fact in turn can lead to populism. This model can explain why in some occasions, the majority of population vote for a populist candidate who promises extreme redistributive policies at the expense of other policies which are harmful for economic growth in the long-run.
