The oldest Persian script ever identified by now is a manuscript of the book Al-Abnīya ‘an Haqā’iq al-’Advīya belonging to the year 447 H./1055 CE. However, amongst the older collections of Qur’anic manuscripts, there can be found notes that extend our knowledge regarding the Persian writing of Iranians to a much earlier time. One of such documents, is the collection of Khayqānī or Khayqānī’s notes in Persian at the end of each of the thirty parts of the Qur’an written and dated in 292 AH/ 905 AD when Khayqānī (a native from Ṭūs in Khurasān) was correcting the thirty-fragment Qur’an. The present article attempts to introduce the five newly discovered fragments of this Qur’an preserved in Chester Beatty Library and Israel’s National Library, as well as its scattered leaves in various museums around the world; the article also studies the historical and literary aspects of Khayqānī’s Persian writings. At the end, some of the other old Persian scripts on the old Qur’anic manuscripts are introduced.

The MS Hazine 1653 is one of the few extant manuscripts of Rashid al-Din Fazl Allah’s Jāme’ al-Tavārikh that was transcribed under the author’s personal auspices at the Rab’-e Rashidi. It was transferred to Herat during Shahrokh’s reign. As some parts of the MS were missing, it was completed and repaired on Shahrokh’s order. The person in charge of the restoration was the renowned historian of the Timurid time, Hafez Abru. The latter made a number of changes in the manuscript the most important of which was the replacement of its pre-Islamic period with the first volume of his Majma’ al-Tavārikh. This article deals with the codicological aspect of this very involved work. The importance of this MS is worth mentioning from several viewpoints: first, it is one of the three surviving dated MSS of the Jame’al-Tavārikh transcribed at the Rab’-e Rashidi’; second, it is the only extant manuscript of Hafez Abru’s Majma’ al-Tavārikh that has been transcribed by the author himself; third, numerous copies have been directly or indirectly reproduced from it, this misleading some of the contemporary scholars in identifying the texts of those copies.

Of the surviving works by Hasan b. Abd al-Mo’men Khoei, nicknamed Hosām al-Din Khoei, a celebrated man of letters and scribe (munshi) from the 7th century H./13th CE, several treatises have thus far been published. A good number of these works are in prose dealing with the teaching techniques of epistolary compositions and art of non-ornate writing (tarassol). In his time and amongst his contemporaries, Hosām al-Din was commonly referred to as “Hosām the poet”, but nothing of his compositions has reached us excepting a few short poems and scattered verses in his prose works.
In this article, a poem of 145 verses by Hosām al-Din is introduced for the first time, which constitutes part of his qasamiyat (oath verses). By qasamiya here is meant short verses in the qeta’form that generally begin with the phrase: be khodāei ke (by the God that) or bedān khodāy (by that God who).
First, several examples of this kind of poetry from the older poets are offered; then Hosām al-Din’s qasamiyāt and his innovations in this genre are addressed. In the end, based on the two newly found collections in Turkey’s libraries, an amended version of these qasamiyāt is presented.

Persian speaking people throughout the Islamic era made use of the Arabic script in writing their works. Certain shortcomings in this script, however, caused a number of recorded words and features of the language - especially in the area of vowels and some of the consonants specific to the Persian language - to remain unrepresented in the script, thus, part of the linguistic investigations into the Persian language undergoing certain defectives. On the one hand, our knowledge about the recording of many words is limited to some of the dictionaries mostly of recent time, partly compiled by people who are not indigenous speakers of the language; on the other hand, fortunately, during different periods, there have been written manuscripts in which the punctuation of letters has been carefully executed; such manuscripts can be used in completing linguistic studies.
In the present article, one of such diacritically marked (vocalized) manuscripts, which is an old handwritten copy of Surābādi’s Commentary, has been addressed and the recordings of rare words and some of the recordings different from those in the dictionaries, have been studied.

In accordance with the common practice, the amendment of every text is conducted based on its manuscripts. However, sometimes due to a number of reasons, including scribes’ lack of familiarity with old manuscripts, certain corruptions find their way into those texts, moving a verse or a phrase from its original form so much so that those manuscripts can be of no help in clarifying the corrupted occurrences; so, the editor has to draw on secondary sources. Sanā’i Ghaznavi’s works happen to be of this kind of old texts. Most probably, some of his verses have undergone such distortions that obscure the poet’s original saying and make it hard to comprehend them (the verses).
In this study, the surveying of some of the old dictionaries has demonstrated that such words as poshak, ghīv, zosh, ākanesh, mayazd and bādbān in Sanā’i’s poems have been subject to changes and corruptions and this has led to inaccurate interpretations of his poetry.

The structure and contents of every literary work is determined by the degree of the intellectual and scientific advancement of the author’s time. A good many of the extant works from the early Islamic era, point to the absence of systematic theories and foundations of the prevalent sciences of the time; this of course is not indicative of the inability of the compilers and authors, but is related to inconsistency and instability of rhetorical concepts and terminology among the scholars who have written about the art of rhetoric.
This article presents a critical study of the development of the science of badī’ (figures of speech) in the books on Arabic rhetoric as well as in the early works on Persian rhetoric (Tarjomān al-belāgha; Hadāyeq al-sehr; Al-Mo’jam fī ma’ā’īr al-ash’ār al-Ajam). While the theoretical and structural essentials of these three Persian books are analyzed, goals, perspectives, and views of their writers about their own works are assessed, so are their outlooks concerning the development of rhetorical sciences, especially, badī’. Critique of definitions, citations, the devising of terminology, and Persian equivalents as well as the chapter arrangement in the above-mentioned books are the main goals of this study.

In recent years, with the expansion of the range of epic studies, scholars have come to be acquainted with a number of heroic poems, which were unknown to them until then, the reason being mainly their sub-standard language, as this category of works, mostly belonging to recent times, originated in the culture of general populace. One of such heroic texts is the poem Kuk-e Damāvand, which did not gain any significant fame and was not profusely reproduced, apparently because of the similarities of its accounts with its contemporary texts.
By examining the intertextual evidence and comparing the stylistic features of this poem with those of similar texts, one can find out the approximate date of its composition. In this article, first, the poem has been introduced, and then its composition date has been investigated and several stylistic features of it have been addressed.

Qorrat al-’ayn or Qorrat al-’oyun, is one of the old Persian texts written on the comparison of Arabic sayings with their Persian counterparts and with Qor’anic verses. The writing of this book seems to have taken place around the latter half of the 6th H./12 CE, probably by an author named Qāzi ūsh. Of this work there are a good number of copies in various libraries all over the world, the oldest of which, until recently, was believed to be the MS dated 722 H. at the Fāteh Librar y, Istanbul. Nonetheless, there exists a MS in a collection belonging to Jalal al-Din Homā’i that is dated 651 H. presently kept at Iran’s National Library.

One of the most important questions in Persian painting is how to select a text for painting. The general assumption is that painters have had little liberty in choosing such a text, but the present study demonstrates that this question is subject to a specific logic that is somehow related to the world view of a painter or a group of painters.
By employing a sociological approach, this comparative structural analysis has particularly compared several important works in the style of Kamāl al-Din Behzād with a few of Sa’di’s verses, finding the reason for shared structural elements reflected in the world views of the works of the two, in a single same sociological context called Fotovvatiya or Ā’in-e Javānmardi. One can argue that, apropos painting, the world views of some circles of Fotovvatiya followers are reflected in Behzād’s painting style; and in the domain of poetry, the world views are reflected in Sa’di’s works. Thus, the painters in Behzād’s style show great interest in Sa’di’s poetry; they have even adhered to Ā’in-e Javānmardi or have, at least, been immensely under its influence. Some of their paintings can be counted as illustrated Fotovvat-nāmeh (Book of chivalry).

Mirza Mohammad Hasan, with the nom de plume Qateel, a Persian speaking poet and writer of the Indian Subcontinent, composed the book Haft Tamāshā, in 1226 H./ 1811 CE, his objective being the recording of the custom and practices of Hindus and Muslims living in the Subcontinent. The major part of this work is devoted to a description of the practices and rituals of the inhabitants of such cities as Kashmir, Ponjab, Shāhjahānabād (Delhi). Some of these traditional practices are specific to Hidus and some to Muslims, and yet there are others common among the two groups. Qateel has tried to impartially expound the practices most of which he himself had observed directly, and that were closely connected to his social life. The sections on the traditions and rituals of marriage, including marriage proposal, sācheq kardan (sending clothes, jewelry and confectionaries by a groom to his bride the day before the wedding day) , hanā bandān (staining fingers and nails with henna) and wedding ceremony, are among the most fascinating part of the book, written rather extensively in a simple and eloquent prose.

The Tarjomat al-khavāss, a Qor’anic commentary by Ali b. Hasan of Rey, was corrected by Mansoor Pahlavan and published in 1394 Sh./ 2015. The present article intends to make a critical study of the above-mentioned edition using a descriptive-analytical methodology. The findings of this study indicate that there are differences between the emended text and the primary MS (noskhe-ye asās) as well as other MSS of the Tarjomat al-khavāss, in terms ofomissions, additions, miswriting, shifting the positions of words, and changes in the construction of sentences. However, the editor has avoided addressing these many differences. He has often, based on informed guess, preferred his own choice of a variant. Therefore, his edition cannot be considered a critical amendment substantiated by necessary criteria. Contrary to the editor’s conviction, his method of emendation is not to be regarded as being based on primary MSS.
