Revisiting the potentials of the Islamic mysticism for constructing a civilization can, in addition to improving the descriptive literature of civilization studies, reveal the significance of Islamic mysticism in a harmonious civilizational system. Foundations of such a civilizational research consist in doctrines of theoretical and practical mysticism as well as the historical practice of Islamic mysticism. The main deliverance of the theoretical mysticism is “divine attributes and marriage of attributes” and the main deliverance of the practical mysticism is “proximity to, and distance from, God”. These deliverances can be employed to offer a description of the desired Islamic civilization. With respect to the potentials of civilization-construction, we can demonstrate the main place of mysticism at the center of the Islamic civilization by a transition from the basic objection of aversion from the mundane life inherent in mysticism and its doctrines to the Islamic sources of mysticism and its final doctrine of “abiding after annihilation” (al-baqā’ ba’d al-fanā’), rather than annihilation as well as elements such as khilafa bi l-Sayf (succession by sword) and the harmony between the soul. From another perspective, we will explain that mysticism can bring about fruitful results for the construction of an Islamic civilization by providing the following four elements: spirituality, a special spiritual rationality in a coherent system, an advantageous model of commitment to the Shari’a, and a special methodology of understanding religious texts (interpretation). Moreover, I will examine why the desired civilization on the basis of Islamic mysticism has not been realized, despite its fruitful civilization results.

What is criterion for the Islamity of the Islamic civilization? Is it faith (Internal feature) or Islam (External factor)? Emphasizing on Islam as an external issue could result in hypocrisy, and highlighting faith (Iman) might conduce to excommunication (Takfir) in the civilization. In order to resolve this dilemma, I will argue that Islamic civilization (in theory and in reality), starts from minimum Islam to include as many people as members of the Muslim Ummah, then it develops by faith and internal practices. These practices are spiritual trainings, by which hypocrisy can be removed. At the same time, it is essential and fundamental to pave the way for faith-foster by spiritual rituals. Although social faith and faithful civilization is the peak point of the Islamic civilization but faith per se (without external signs) cannot be evaluated on individual and social scales. Based on this, on the contrary to excommunicators, Islam is the single way for the recognition of Islamity in the civilization, and Iman is the way not for evaluation and inquisition, but for flourishing of humanity on individual and social scale to make inter-human relationships that is the hard core of every civilization.

If we take a civilization to consist in a set of components organized on the basis of a fundamental thought and in terms of various systems, then the origins of such a fundamental thought in the Early Islamic Civilization were Islamic Revelatory (Waḥyānī) doctrines the core of which appears in the Quran. Thus the Quran was the epistemic foundation, the logic of composition, the determinant of how parts of this civilization are related, and the guide for the main direction of the Islamic civilization. This result can be supported by an internal look at the Quran and an investigation of its civilizational doctrines, on the one hand, and an external look at the facts of the matters regarding the Islamic civilization, and the Quran’s functions and roles in it. In this paper, I concern myself to the latter issue, that is the civilizational function of the Quran. I examine this in terms of two main axes: the Quran’s impact on the spirit and directions of the Islamic civilization, and its impact on parts and manifestations of the Islamic civilization. Within the latter axis, I examine sciences, arts, and ecological circumstances of Muslims and their social lives. I conclude that if Quranic doctrines are ignored in social lives of Muslims and are restricted to intellectual issues irrelevant to social needs, then the Islamic civilization will cease to exist. However, the current civilizational circumstances of the human kind and the historical shifts of civilizations can pave the path for the reappearance of the Quran in the Islamic civilization and its centrality in the new Islamic civilization.

If we take the civilization to be the largest procedural system of human interactions such that no larger social unit can be imagined or established, then the question arises of what fundamental factors can bring about such a large-scale social unit, especially in circumstances of cultural variety. In this paper, we emphasize on two fundamental Quranic elements that can play a role in the construction of the largest-scale system of human interactions in the chaotic circumstances of today’s cultural variety: (a) the principle of “Ta’aruf” (mutual acquaintance) and (b) the principle of “Ta’amul bi l-ma’ruf” (good mutual treatment). The Quran bases the element of ta’aruf on a distinction among common ethical, mystical and social components, and bases “ta’amul bi l-ma’ruf” on dignity, beneficence and love. This Quranic theory is a positive, constructive theory in the face of social and cultural varieties and differences leading not only to tolerance in the society (negative approach), but also to corrective and ethical aspects of each different creature in the formulation of a civilization.

In most human sciences, analyses are made on the basis of theories; in fact, analyses outside theories are not adequately well-founded. In this paper, I will be concerned with the question of how we can, in the field of civilization studies—as a speculative field of social sciences—employ civilization as a level of analysis or as a theoretical framework in the analysis of social phenomena. In other words, what is the function of civilization as a theory? And then there is an ancillary question: in the use of civilization as a level of analysis, what concepts should be deployed and what need or question each of these concepts respond to? In this paper, I seek to examine the nature of civilization, its focal point, how to construct a civilization (as a process or a state) and the area of civilizational validity. Moreover, I will provide a theoretical framework for explanation and analysis in civilization studies.

In this paper, I will deal with the problem of the influence of anthropological and methodological presuppositions in theorizing in humanities in order to open a discussion about localized human and social sciences. The emphasis of Muslim philosophers on the knowledge and the conception of universals in the definition of human beings is, in my view, inadequate to establish localized humanities. The theory of conventional ideas, put forward by ‘Allama Ṭabāṭabā’ī, is a different approach emphasizing, on the one hand, on the element of will, action and the instinct of deployment in human understanding, and, on the other hand, in order to show it, it appeals to inductive and intuitive methods. I introduce this as a different approach to the foundation of localized human sciences. The ability of this theory in understanding and justifying the social, in comparison with earlier philosophical approaches, is its distinctive feature. According to the theory of conventional ideas, the civilized characters of human beings is out of urgency. This is contrary to the well-known view among philosophers that it originates in human nature. According to ‘Allama Ṭabāṭabā’ī, cultural differences can be accounted for in terms of differences in conventional conceptions that come out of concrete volitions.

I will deal with the methodological relation between two epistemic models of Islamic theology and modern sociology with respect to conflicts and interactions. The main question is how to distinguish methods deployed by Muslim theologians and sociologists in their classical readings. Results of investigations show that conflicts or interactions between deployed methods in classical readings of both Islamic theology and modern sociology traces back to their respective goals. Although these sociologists, just like theologians, seek to respond to ethical concerns and needs, theologians adopt intellectual and transmitted (based on transmitted traditions) methods to arrive, with certainty, at the possibility of achieving reliable truths regarding the relation with God as the origin of being, but sociologists adopt quantitative and qualitative methods to confidently discover principles governing human social lives in contemporary circumstances. Theological methods are directed at fundamental meaning-giving goals, and sociological methods are concerned with ordinary assurances about everyday life. We should preserve the distinction between these two fields, but when it comes to the external and historical realization of theological goals, there should be interactions between them to clarify historical and objective possibilities of each period in its process of realization.
