One of the oldest and most important proofs offered for the existence of God in the Islamic Kalām is the argument from incipience (ḥudūth) and eternity (qidam). In this paper, I elaborate and examine the developments of the argument from reliable sources of Imāmī hadiths to the work of al-Shaykh al-Ṣadūq and alShaykh al-Mufīd’s school of Kalām, and Karājakī’s so-called school of Baghdad. The research shows that the argument from incipience and eternity has undergone a considerable development in this period. The first development was from its simple versions in terms of hadiths to argumentations with philosophical and natural reasons and al-Ṣadūq’s well-formed demonstrative form of the argument in the style of Mu’tazilīs. In general, al-Shaykh al-Ṣadūq’s method in the proof of the incipience of the world is to a large extent similar to that of Mu’tazilīs and Bahshamī Imāmīs with respect to its claims as well as its grounds and reasons. His arguments here show his influence from the teachings of the Mu’tazila. For al-Shaykh al-Ṣadūq, although beliefs are mainly supported by hadiths from the Imams, one must not or had better not rest content to them. Instead, one should support the contents of hadiths with Kalāmī arguments. In the early School of Baghdad, the argument from incipience and eternity did not go through serious changes in comparison to al-Ṣadūq’s period. The only difference was in the way the argument was formulated and certain arguments for its premises. For alShyakh al-Ṣadūq and theologians in the early School of Baghdad, Mu’tazilī arguments from incipience and eternity were not in conflict with the teachings of the Imams. On the contrary, they were in agreement with hadiths from the Imams.

A disputed issue between Muslim and non-Muslim theologians was the reliability and scope of rational understanding in discovering religious doctrines. Among Islamic sects, there has been a spectrum of views in both extremes, and some parties of the debate accused others of exit from Islam. One influential sect with a particular view of the issue is the Wahhabi branch of Salafism. Their theoreticians, such as Ibn Taymiyya, minimize the reliability of the reason in understanding and discovering religious intentions, and in some cases, they totally deny its reliability. And in cases where a judgment of the reason is in conflict or thought to be in conflict with that of the religion, the latter is preferred over the former. In this paper, I deploy an attributive-analytic method, to reply to the question of the view of this group about the reliability of the reason, and the extent of the cogency of their arguments. I conclude that they divide judgments of the reason into explicit conclusive and probabilistic non-explicit judgments, and they deny a major portion of rational judgments and doctrines, especially in the realm of the practical reason, in the domain of religion and super-natural issues. In their view, arguments propounded by theologians, philosophers, sages, and Sufis are from the probabilistic reason, and should thus be rejected.

Of views about Caliphate and Imamate as most challenging issues in Islam, the views of Shah Walīyyullāh Dihlawī, as an important Sunni Muslim theoretician in the Indian Peninsula, are of special significance because of their innovations. Dihlawī provides a new definition of Caliphate and Imamate and takes them as collective obligations (wājib kifā’ī), and then along with the Imami view, and for different reasons, he takes Caliphate and Imamate as principles of the religion. However, a number of objections can be made against his views. For instance, his definition does not cover all religious obligations of a Caliph. Moreover, taking Caliphate to be a collective obligation is in conflict with the view of the majority of Sunni Muslims and is along with the Salafis. Furthermore, although his consideration of Imamate as a principle of religion is in agreement with the Imami position, his evidence and reasons for the view do not meet scholarly criteria. In fact, they involve many contradictions, and contrary to his own claim, most of his views have precedents.

Qāṣī Sa’īd Qummī was a philosopher and mystic in the 11th century AH (17th century) and a prominent figure of the Islamic wisdom. Like many other Muslim philosophers, he maintains that the soul is an immaterial substance, but his main disagreement with other philosophers is that, in his view, the soul never fully loses its existential connection to the body even after death, and a portion of the elemental material body always remains with the soul even posthumously, and the resurrection in the afterlife occurs with that bodily portion. Thus, contrary to philosophical theories, he takes the resurrection to be bodily and elemental. In this paper, I seek to study his views about the soul-body problem, its implications, and some serious conflicts within his philosophical speculations that have occurred because of different principles he adopts. I conclude that he has undergone different periods of thinking, in each of which was influenced by theological (Kalāmī), philosophical, or mystical principles, and thus, in each period, he maintained views that were in conflict with his previous line of thinking.

Maurice Merleau-Ponty, the French existentialist and phenomenologist, tries to bridge the gap between the soul and the body which was created in Descartes’s philosophy. Thus, he provides a new method for the description of the human experience in the world, and instead of reliance on ideas, he offers a phenomenology of perception. In his Phenomenology of Perception, where he is greatly influenced by Descartes’s Meditations, he tries hard to solve predicaments faced by rationalists and empiricists in this regard. According to Merleau-Ponty, phenomenal perception is bodily, rather than a mental event. For him, we are bodily perceivers. The body is the human situation in the world, the human viewpoint to the world, and our anchor in the world. Merleau-Ponty rejects the Cartesian distinction about the soul and body and the mechanical world. In this paper, we identify points of agreement and disagreement between Merleau-Ponty’s and Descartes’s views of the soul-body problem, and then examine the principality of the body in Merleau-Ponty’s thought and the principality of soul in Descartes’s view, and thus, we portray a general picture of their views of the soul. We conclude that both philosophers were unsuccessful in their respective accounts of the soul-body relationship.

One foundation of the worldview of any school of thought is knowledge of the human being, which affects the school’s justification and explanation of many issues. Moral fiṭrah, or moral innate knowledge, serves as a main characteristic of Motahhari’s study of the human nature. For him, the human being has moral awareness as well as tendency towards good and aversion of bad things because of his essential and intrinsic structure. The human being has the two components in virtue of his existential structure, without being affected by any social imposition. Because of this innate and non-acquired structure, the human being is independent of the religion and the doctrines of the Revelation, on the one hand, and is closely tied to them, on the other hand. Although Motahhari’s views might be objectionable in certain respects, they are helpful in the justification of many religious issues in their generality.

Role functionalism is a version of functionalism in contemporary philosophy of mind and a subclass of causal-role functionalism. On this version of functionalism, psychological states and properties are characterized as second-order functional (in a causal sense), and it is emphasized that they are not reducible to material or non-material realizers of those roles. In particular, role functionalism employs the metaphysical concept of realization in its characterization of the relation between psychological states and bodily or brain states. After a brief account of the central components of role functionalism, and in particular, its materialist version, the paper offers an argument to show that materialist functionalism involves an internal inconsistency. I then point out that role functionalism does not entail materialism, and then, ignoring the above inconsistency, I seek to examine the implications of role functionalism for the possibility of life after death, and certain advantages as well as problems of the formulation of life after death in terms of functionalism.
