The year 1960 in science and technology involved some significant events. These events have led to the use of Interdisciplinary and Applied Sciences such as anthropology, mathematics and geometry as its branches in archeology. Mathematics is the key tools for the classification, arrangement and analysis of archaeological data. Symmetry is one of the most important branches of algebra in mathematics as well as one of the main factors of creation that it is an increasingly important factor in the world order. The fact that symmetry is classified by means of mathematics in one, two and three dimension ,While it as biological and cognitive characteristics of human societies has left a significant footprint and has influence not only in mating and reproductive behavior but used in determining the Cognitive and technological capacity of hominines. It appears that both the brain and body have symmetric structures. It is proven that the human brain sensitive to symmetry in an area called the medial occipital gyrus (MOG). This area contains neurons that react to symmetry. On the other hand it has been argued that physically, modern humans have mirror symmetry. This type of symmetry has a significant effect upon mating ability, reproductive success and disease resistance and so we can say “Natural Selection” emphasis symmetry as a factor for survival or non-survival. Thus, it will help researcher become a better analyst not only in engineering but also in the study of human sciences such as anthropology and archeology. Nevertheless, symmetry is an evolutionary phenomenon in terms of both physically and cognitive. Accordingly, it is a good indicator to understand Cognitive and behavioral capacities hominids. The first symmetrical tools are Acheulean handaxes that more than 1.5 million year old. These tools have been used by various human species. A geometrical analysis of handaxes morphology shows that deviation of symmetry is decreased over time. The reason for this is hominid brain evolution and its key role in the perception and Implementation of three-dimensional symmetry. Two-dimensional symmetry arose after the emergence of Homo sapiens. The fact that modern human is the creator of two-dimensional symmetry (Cave painting, pottery panting…) due to the development in spatial cognition. This type of symmetry is called border or all-over patterns depending on a motif repeated in one or two direction by the use of one or more geometrical actions (Translation, Rotation, Reflection and Grid reflection). This cognitive feature has long life in the world and the last two decades have seen a growing trend towards geometric symmetry in tiling, textile and pottery … to the understanding culture and the relationships between “cultures” and “populations”. The reason for this is that Symmetry between cultures, societies and generations is unconsciously transmitted. Thus symmetries have emerged as powerful platforms for understanding the similarities and cultural differences between Communities. The writers believe that symmetry for culture as the genes humans inherit from their parents just as the traits such as height and diseases can be inherited; Cultural characteristics through symmetry can be transmitted to the next generation. But despite the importance, up to now, far too little attention has been paid to symmetry in archaeology of Iran and the nature of it remains unclear. This paper attempts to show that the symmetry is important in anthropological and archeological studies, and it is essential that archeologist attempts to create a place for symmetry in cultural and cross-cultural studies in archaeology of Iran. In addition, this paper introduces the isometrics or symmetry motions and variety of symmetrical patterns for Iranian archeologist.

Relation between Iranian and Greek Societies dates to the times earlier than Hellenistic periods of Iran. Regarding this, artistic transactions have long history between two civilizations. Since, Parthians inherited Seleucids’ territories, their artistic creativity was affected by Greek territories; and as Sassanid were Parthians’ successors, Hellenism can be traced in their manifestations. However, it is disseminated that Sassanid art is uprising of oriental traditions, but Greek elements penetration should not be ignored. Sassanid reliefs are reliable witness for Hellenistic traditions continuity after Hellenism era including Greek depicting tradition such as gods’ personification, Hercules image, Nike goddess picture, nimbus, realism, Plasticity, Perspective, equal statics that can be seen among different artistic phases of the period. However, no exact demarcation can be offered about accepting or rejecting Greek elements; and when Late Sassanid art is referred as “rejecting alien elements” phase, Nike depiction is seen at Taq-i-Bostan, Kirmanshah. By the way, derivative elements reduced to aesthetic aspects and in other definitions faded to current society believs.

Sistan with an area of over 8500 k.m. in the east of Iran and having 22 geographical domains is one of the most important archaeological regions in Iran. So that, about 1662 archaeological sites were identified on it during the archaeological field surveys. Gerdi domain with an area of 664 k. m in the south of Sistan having 485 archaeological sites is the most numerous archaeological domain in Sistan. It is located in the south of Sistan and in the region by no inhabitants and quite desert. Indeed, Gerdi domain is a part of desert of Iran.
The results of archaeological surveys that performed in this domain are as follows: 337 archaeological sites belong to the Iron Age; 202 sites to the historical period and 97 sites to the Islamic era. It should be notes that some of the archaeological sites have two or three different settlement periods as like as prehistory, historical period or Islamic era.

Mazandaran is one of the most important region of the northern lands of Iran that is surrounded between northern slopes of central Alborz Mountains and southern seashore of Caspian see. The earliest presence of humankind in this region returns to Late Paleolithic and Mesolithic. There are many evidences which show the importance and oldness of artifacts in Mazandaran. Archaeological excavations in two caves near Behshahr, Hotu and Kamarband, have estimated the precedence of ceramic around 8000 years ago.
Archaeological data demonstrates that there always have been an affinity relation between artifacts and spiritual and moral cognitions during the culture history of Iran. Runic concepts and symbolic indications have ever been an effective and charming manner in transition of mental, ritual and religious elements in Iranian arts. The same as other regions of Iran we can see this tradition in Mazandaran.
Many artifacts and objects have been discovered in ancient sites of Mazandaran. There are a lot of motives on some of them by which we can recognize the thoughts and believes of their manufacturers. Potteries and some of other movable object such as metal works contain ideological motives and indications and symbolic meanings.
On the other hand, nowadays there are various native arts in different areas of Mazandaran especially in villages. Artifacts such as woven, textile, engraving and pottery have decorated with primitive and symbolic motives. One of the most important matters in archaeology is the formation of designs and patterns and their evolution and changes which cause the understanding of some economic, social and ideological aspects of the past societies. One of the main goals of this investigation is the comparative study about prehistoric, historical and native geometric motives which have used on artifacts in the region. We have identified and classified these designs. Then, the reformation process of these motives were studied and finally, we have tried to recognize their meanings if it was possible. The investigation has been managed documentary and field work methodologically.
The mentioned motives were divided into geometric, vegetative, animal, human and symbolic types. In the present paper we are going to describe and analysis the geometric ones. We are facing with little material because of the lack of archaeological excavations in Mazandaran province. However, the geometric patterns are numerous and various. Some of them have continued during the periods; some others have changed and evolutioned and the others have disappeared. Environment, religion, domestic culture and folklore were the most important factors for the formation and continuity of these geometric designs.
This subject hasn’t already investigated all-inclusive. Study of these motives during the mentioned periods has caused the identity and discovery of their originality and their native identification. We have gathered our data by the study of reports and documents. Besides, we have done a field work which contains sampling, photographing, visiting of museums, archaeological sites and far-reaching villages, and interviewing with native-born artificers and informed investigators.
    1. This paper was extracted from a research under the title of “The Comparative Study of the Symbolic Motives of the Prehistoric, Historic and Native Arts of Mazandaran” which was Authorized by Research and Technology Deputy, University of Mazandaran and directed by Dr. Rahmat Abbasnejad Seresti (Operator) and Moeinehsadat Hejazi (Cooperator) in April 2014.

In the late fourth millennium B.C. (ca. 3250-3000 B.C.), a culture spread throughout Caucasus and Urmia Lake basin which has been called Transcaucasia or Kura Aras Culture. These people which archaeologists believe originate from Southern Caucasus, were developed not only in the area of animal husbandry and agriculture but also in the field of art and technology. The works remained from this period suggests the level of creativity, innovation, scientific knowledge and artistic skills of the people in that era. Among these skills earthenware making can be mentioned. One of the distinct features of earthenware in this period is blackish-gray or glossy black color which is handmade and contains mineral ingredients and has been carefully polished. In this period, artists preferred symbolic art to descriptive art and also animal figures to human, plant, etc. figures. Evidently, by examining the few remains of these works, remarkable characteristics and features of the social condition and even livelihood of these people can be discovered. In this regard, ten remarkable samples of earthenware from this culture were selected from Yanik Tepe Site and their decorative features as well as the use of patterns and their designs were studied and analyzed; although an accurate interpretation of these motifs can never be provided. Based on the findings of this research, in using the designs, the potter has considered a particular variety in the patterns and designs. Here, few dishes include decorative designs and the patterns on them are inspired by nature which reflects a kind of realism and association with the life and environment of the artists.

Persepolis annual rainfalls, sometimes had caused storing huge quantity of water in underground waterways and eventually damaging the waterways and palaces. The main aim of the excavation along the Persepolis canals outlet, (started from April 30, 2012 and continued for 112 days until August 20, 2012) was to open an urgent way ,among the mass of deposited soils of Persepolis previous excavations in south of the terrace, to led the stored water of annual rainfall in the underground canals, out of the PlatformFor the purpose of Excavation, a north - south trench (Started from outlet of the canals to the south where the soils of previous excavation was finished) with about 100 meters and with 4 meters width was designed. It was necessary to finish the operation in just one season of work, before that the annual rainfall of the region get started. With achieving to the main aim of the excavation in the end also a series of interesting findings, including new details on the Persepolis terrace wall and some waterways in the trench was detected.
Though, given the relatively similar levels of identified waterways with other Achaemenid structures in south area of the terrace and also due to the other discovered evidence, they can be dated to the Achaemenid era, it is difficult to understand their function and organization in south area of the terrace. Generally, discovered waterways can be considered as a part of Achaemenid structures system surrounding the Persepolis Platform. Nonetheless, it’s possible to say that Revealed evidence including direction of discovered canals and specially cut off waterways of No 2 and 3, perhaps indicating existence of a pond in south area of the terrace.

In the late fourth millennium BC (approximately 3250-3000), a culture spreads throughout Caucasus and Urmia Lake basin which is referred to as old Transcaucasia or Kura-Araxes culture. Its remains have been found in the three Transcaucasia republics, North West of the Iranian plateau, Eastern Anatolia, Kangavar Valley and Central Zagros. Its bio-geography is very diverse; forested areas with different plant species in the mountains of the Caucasus, the Armenian highlands and plains of Urmia as well as diversity in the settlements is indicative of their adaptation to various environmental conditions. In addition to animal husbandry and agriculture, these people were advanced in the field of art and technology. The works remained from this period indicate creativity, innovation, science and art of the people in those days, because great care has been taken in their structure and design. Pottery is one of these arts. Pottery is one of the handicrafts of this period and the pottery works remained from this period have great artistic value. One of the main characteristics of this period is the blackish dark grey or shiny black color. Their pottery are handmade and include a combination of minerals. Their middle parts have been carefully polished and decorated with carving and geometric motifs. These pottery pieces are baked and are mostly conical or in the form of glasses with two handles or large pitchers with two handles on the sides. Their forms are very similar, which indicates a kind of cultural unity and relationship between various regions during this period. During this period, artists preferred symbolic art to descriptive art and animal motifs to human or plant motifs. They used these motifs to narrate a specific subject matter from their everyday life and depicted all ethical and artistic issues by using motifs on their pottery. Obviously, by inspecting few works remained from this period, distinctive characteristics of the social and life conditions of these people can be discovered. Since in the beginning pottery pieces had a simple form and later potters used complicated forms and because only few samples are left and no comprehensive study has been conducted yet on the pottery industry during this period and especially the motifs and patterns used for the pottery pieces, the necessity of conducting further research in this area is felt. Therefore, this study seeks to investigate and analyze the visual and decorative motifs of the pottery pieces of this period found in the studied site (Yanik Tepe). In this regard, ten distinctive samples of pottery pieces belonging to this culture were selected from Yanik Tepe site and their decorative characteristics as well as their motifs and designs were studied. In the motifs on the pottery pieces, the potters have mostly used geometrical patterns and have avoided using other motifs. 28% of the motifs used on the pottery pieces are geometrical. There are approximately six visual elements on each pottery piece. The middle part which is painted comprises approximately 39% of the sample pottery pieces. Since human and animal motifs consist of specific patterns, the potter has taken sufficient care in using them and has only used them to refer to a specific subject or motif. In other words, here, motifs are a means for describing the surrounding environment. Although no accurate interpretation of these motifs can be provided, based on the findings of the present research, the potter has used a specific variety of motifs and patterns. Here, fewer dishes are decorated and their motifs are inspired by the surrounding nature, which reflects a kind of realism and relationship with life and the environment.

Persepolis annual rainfalls, sometimes had caused storing huge quantity of water in underground waterways and eventually damaging the waterways and palaces. The main aim of the excavation along the Persepolis canals outlet, (started from April 30, 2012 and continued for 112 days until August 20, 2012) was to open an urgent way ,among the mass of deposited soils of Persepolis previous excavations in south of the terrace, to led the stored water of annual rainfall in the underground canals, out of the Platform For the purpose of Excavation, a north - south trench (Started from outlet of the canals to the south where the soils of previous excavation was finished) with about 100 meters and with 4 meters width was designed. It was necessary to finish the operation in just one season of work, before that the annual rainfall of the region get started. With achieving to the main aim of the excavation in the end also a series of interesting findings, including new details on the Persepolis terrace wall and some waterways in the trench was detected. Starting from the north of the trench, with the removal of the upper layers of debris in the surrounding of the outlet, some new details of the terrace wall identified. The main discovery was to see the unfinished carving of the mountain rocks beyond of the terrace wall in both sides of the outlet. Here to guide the water stream of the canals, a path carved in the natural rock, which extends approximately 9 meters to the south was created. It was also detected that the south east corner of the terrace wall is finished exactly above the outlet. Further to the south in continuation of the rock carved path, a waterway with width between 60 to 75 cm and built by large and medium uncarved stones was uncovered. The waterway stretched 23 to the south where with getting close to the western bulk of the trench, its continuing was not clear. Although it seemed further evidence indicating waterways continue towards the southwest, however, there was also the possibility that original canal was not no longer stretches at all. At a distance of approximately 35 to 40 meters south of the outlet, evidence of two separate waterway (waterways 2 and 3 on the map), made up of large (waterway 2) and small stones (waterway 3) were identified .while unlike the first waterway (No.1), direction of these waterways was from East to West, stretches of both of them to the east have finalized or destroyed at once in the trench area. With continuing exploring, remains of another waterway (No. 4) was revealed in the southern half of the trench at a distance of 55 meters from the walls of the terrace. Identified approximately with southeast to northwest direction, recent waterway was made and partly covered with big carved block stones.
