Progressive collapse is usually defined as follows: the expansion of an initial local damage within structures as a chain chemical reaction that led to the partial or total collapse of the structure. Studies in relation to the failure of structural systems in recent years highlight the importance of the phenomenon of progressive collapse caused by abnormal loading such as: accident injuries, earthquake, explosion, and etc. in order to prevent or reduce the occurrence of progressive collapse, various strategies are provided for design against progressive failure in American government documents such as: GSA and UFC. In these regulations, the loss of bearing capacity of column is considered as a promising phenomenon to investigate the performance of structure against abnormal loading. In this study, three steel structures with dual side load bearing system, average moment frame, and bracing system of 5, 10, and 15 floors were designed in Etabs 2013 software; then, using the GSA2003 regulation and selecting the method of alternative route of load transformation, foregoing structures were modeled as three-dimensional in OpenSEES software; and using nonlinear static analysis and nonlinear dynamic analysis, structures has been investigated against progressive collapse; and the results of nonlinear static analysis and nonlinear dynamic analysis compared with each other. After reviewing the results of the analysis showed that for every two analysis, removing the side column is most critical state of column elimination. In all three structures, removing the column in ground floor level creates most critical state for structure towards higher levels. By increasing the height of the structure, robustness index also is increased.

The progressive collapse of a structure is the development of an initial local damage that damage extends in the structure and structural failure occurs. There are many parameters that can effect on the resistance of structure against progressive collapse. One of these parameters is rigidity of the floor that less attention in its modeling has been paid. Therefore, in this paper effect of the floor's rigidity has been discussed on the resistance of structure against progressive collapse. For this purpose, beams of span that it’s column has been removed, with metal deck floor is modeled in the finite element software. Since the rigidity of the floor is effective in the progressive collapse, three-dimensional moment frame structure with metal deck floor has been modeled in the ABAQUS software. The nonlinear static analysis (push down analysis) and the nonlinear dynamic analysis are used to investigate the progressive collapse. In the nonlinear static analysis, the column will be removed and the gravity load with the magnification coefficient equal two will be applied to the span that it’s column was removed. Then the gravity load gradually increases. The nonlinear dynamic analysis in the progressive collapse consists of two steps. In the first step, gravity load of the column that has been removed, is replaced as a concentrated force. In the second step, dynamic load is defined as the short time and the nonlinear dynamic analysis is done. The investigations of this study show that considering rigidity of the floor in the modeling, has an important influence on the results of the progressive collapse. Considering the rigidity of the floor increased the maximum vertical load. Thus, regarding with progressive collapse, rigidity of the floor should be reviewed and considered in the modeling.

One of the most important issues discussed structural passive defense is progressive collapse. Progressive collapse occurs the sudden destruction caused by the deliberate structural member by accidents or disasters, such as earthquakes and terrorist military or operational errors and downtime has spread to adjacent organs and extended downtime for the chain is ruining a part of or the entire structure. Structural performance by identifying the key elements (elements with the greatest potential for progressive collapse) will be upgraded and strengthened them. In this paper buildings with 4,7and 12 stories of reinforced concrete moment frame with resistant system has been selected L-shaped plan. To determine the key elements, different situations Delete columns plan, is considered. For the first time, the progressive collapse by two method of the sensitivity index and load factor was evaluated and structures have been analysised nonlinear static analysis (Push Down Analysis). From of the values of the bearing capacity of the structure, sensitivity index and the load balance corresponding to the target displacement, the load factor is calculated. The Element with the maximum of sensitivity as well as the lowest load factor as a key element in determining the progressive collapse. The results in this paper show that L-shaped concrete building plan corner columns is the greatest potential for progressive collapse. Moreover, the results indicate that the structures in height, has a better performance against progressive collapse.

In this study, some researches about end rigid zones parameters and column removal duration in progressive collapse reinforced concrete frames are taken place. Due to massive dimensions of beams and columns in reinforced concrete frames, the effect of end rigid zones cannot be ignored. Column removal duration is one of the variables that can have different values considering the cause of an accident in which this study it is assessed in conditions such as suddenly, standard and gradually removal. Therefore, two 4- and 8-storey reinforced concrete frames are designed via OpenSees Software. The impact of end rigid zones and column removal duration in either frames has been evaluated by removal of the middle and corner column. In order to evaluate end rigid zones for determining vertical stiffness of structure and beams rotation considering performance level, nonlinear dynamic analysis is used. In addition, to assess structural capacity, nonlinear static analysis of increasing load is applied. To evaluate column removal duration, nonlinear dynamic analysis is used to assess the vertical stiffness and performance level of beams. After analyzing the frames, it was shown that the end rigid zone can have a great impact on increasing vertical stiffness; while having much lower influence on beam rotation and structural capacity. Column removal duration can also have an impressive effect on maximum value of vertical displacement. This effect is highly demonstrated in gradually removal; however there is a slight difference in suddenly and standard removal.

Buildings during their useful life may be affected by different external threats. These threats can harm the key elements of buildings and thus lead to progressive collapse. In recent decades, researchers have been working extensively on how to deal with abnormal events such as explosions, accidents and terrorist attacks. In this study, a typically 5-story steel structure with ordinary, intermediate and special (low, medium and high ductility levels) moment frames designed based on internal regulations and all criteria have been controlled. Then by selecting a middle two-dimensional frame, the possibility of occurrence of progressive collapse caused by the sudden removal of corner and middle columns of all three frames have been investigated based on the guidelines of the GSA and the UFC. By defining the concentrated plastic hinges at the element ends and by using the strength and stiffness attenuation parameters resulted from laboratory studies of other researchers, non-linear dynamic behavior of frames due to sudden removal of columns have been investigated. Results show that the possibility of damage to special moment frame is more than the intermediate and ordinary moment frames. Also the results indicate unlike the seismic retrofitting that providing ductility is an important method to reduce damages to the buildings, for damages caused by gravity loads, higher strength and stiffness can limit the progress of damages.

Curing affects all the features of the hardened concrete such as strength and permeability. Therefore, in this paper investigated the effects of six different curing methods, namely immersing in water, abandoning in the laboratory, using wet burlap, wet burlap with nylon, curing chemicals, and steam, on the compressive and torsional strengths and permeability of concrete specimens. Applied concretes were C25 and C35 that in-situ cylindrical chamber used to determine permeability. Results revealed that the concrete abandoned in the laboratory had the worst curing condition regarding torsional and compressive strength gaining. In the “abandoned in the laboratory” method, permeability is increased 62% with 39.3% and 31% decrease in respectively the compressive and torsional strengths compared to their respective specified strengths. Only two curing methods, i.e. “immersing in water” and “using wet burlap with nylon” were able to provide the minimum specified compressive and torsional strengths. With an increase in the concrete specified strength from C25 to C35, there was a decrease in the water permeation speed. Curing with chemicals had the highest speed and amount of water permeation in concrete, and curing through abandoning in the laboratory stood next. Also, curing by immersing in water had the lowest speed and the least amount of water permeation.

One of the basic problems in seismic design of buildings is appropriate configuration of their plans to prevent an increase in torsional moments due to irregularity. Nowadays, usage of irregular plans because of having a specific plan and beautiful appearance is increasing. The existence of irregularities in the structure during an earthquake causes torsion of structure, which leads to the intensification of seismic displacements and forces on structure. In this study, the seismic behavior of regular and irregular reinforced concrete structure with the number 3, 6 and 9 stories under ten records for incremental dynamic analysis have been evaluated. To this purpose, indexes such as maximum drift, residual drift, base shear and response modification factor have been compared. Fragility curves, using the threshold of damage state of RC structure according to HAZUS in both regular and irregular structures have been investigated. The results indicated that by increasing irregularity, maximum drift, residual drift base shear and probability of damage are increased. The response modification factor is also reduced as irregularity increases. Furthermore, by increasing the number of stories and rate of irregularity, the damage percentage of structure is increased. Therefore, design of irregular structures in plan is not recommended as much as possible

When the concrete loses its moisture, shrinkage and volume reduction is happening and eventually cracks create and deformations in the concrete are increased. In this study, the effect of polypropylene, steel, glass, basalt and polymer fiber on compressive strength, flexural strength and shrinkage cracks (early ages) of high strength concrete mixtures were evaluated. The restrained shrinkage test was performed on concrete ring specimens with height of 150 mm, inner diameter of 30 mm and outer diameter of 40 mm according to ASTM C 1581 standard. The crack width and age of restrained shrinkage cracking were main parameters studied in this research. The results showed that, adding fiber, caused increases the compressive strength 16%, 20% and 3% at the age of 3, 7 and 28 days respectively, and also, increased flexural toughness index up to 7.7 times. steel and glass fiber provided good performance in flexural strength, but had relatively poor action in the velocity reduction and cracking time of restrained shrinkage. Also, crack in all of concrete ring specimens except polypropylene containing mixture, was developed to full depth crack. The mixture of polypropylene fiber containing showed reduction in crack width up to 62% and increasing age cracking up to 84%.

The braced frame is used in steel structures to confront lateral loads. In Iran, braced frames, especially concentrically braced frames are more commonly used due to their high levels of rigidity and ease and speed of construction. The bracing member of this system bears considerable amounts of load, and thus it needs to be properly connected to the main frame members to display a satisfactory performance. Gusset plates are used to implement such connections. Due to the need for ductility of concentrically braced frames, researchers have conducted extensive research on factors influencing ductility of these structures and especially their connections. The brace end clearance is one of the factors influencing this parameter. It is also possible to influence the connection and frame performances by using stiffeners on gusset plates. This connection is designed to either prevent problems caused to the end-connection through free buckling of a member or reinforcing the gusset plate to reduce damages caused by possible buckling of a member at the connection location. In this research, 5 one-span one-story frames with diagonal braces were modeled in ABAQUS finite element method software. The effects of brace end clearance and effects of stiffeners on gusset plates were studied in the first 2 models and the other 3 models, respectively. First, a buckling analysis was carried out to study brace critical load and the brace effective length coefficient. Afterwards, considering the initial imperfection determined by buckling analysis, the samples were exposed to post-buckling nonlinear analysis and results of the base shear-displacement and stress-strain curves were compared. Comparison results revealed that by considering the brace end clearance recommended by reputable building codes it is possible to increase ductility and prevent early failure of corner joint plates. Proper use of stiffeners also may improve performance of lateral connections and the braced frame.

With the advancement and development of the concrete industry, the construction of modern structures with high technical and economic efficiency is inevitable, that among which can be cited concrete shell structures. Concrete shell structures that often referred to as ’thin- wall shells’ are suitable structural elements for building spacious infrastructures facilities such as oil and water tanks, silos and etc. In this study, the mechanical behavior of fiber-reinforced cementitious composite thin-wall cylindrical shells under uniform hydrostatic loading has been studied. For this purpose, 36 small sized model of thin-walled cylindrical shells continuing 0%, 5%, 10% sf (partial cement replacement) and 0%, 0.5%, 1%, 1.5%, 2%, 2.5% glass fiber with w/c=0.38 were made and tested after 28 days of wet curing conditions. The compressive and flexural strengths of composite samples were tested to relating concrete strengths with the results of cylindrical shells. Results showed that, the use of silica fume has increased compressive and flexural strength up to 27% and 32%, respectively. Moreover, it also showed that the presence of fiber had no significant effect on compressive strength but increased flexural strength to 21%. In cylindrical shells the addition of sf has increased annular tensile strength to 10% and reduced a strains to28%. Furthermore, addition of 2.5% and 0.5% glass fiber has raised ultimate strain 7.4 times and annular tensile strength up to 37%, respectively.

In concrete structures in order to reduce the story drift, one of the simple methods are using a shear wall. Due to the fact that the concrete shear wall has a suitable stiffness, it can be limited the displacement of the story as much as the seismic demand. The use of GFRP polymer composite rebar in concrete shear walls of along with its many advantages, can be useful for increasing the durability and service life of such structural elements. Also, in concrete shear walls where the congestion of steel reinforcement causes problems in vibration and quality of concrete, replacement of polymer composite rebar with steel rebar due to its high tensile strength, thus reducing the number and cross-sectional area of reinforcing element.
In this study 43 shear walls was analysed subjected to pushover analysis to determination the amount of ductility and lateral strength. 20 models of them reinforced by GFRP polymer composite reinforcement rebar and 20 models reinforced by steel reinforcements, and for three last models difference concrete compression amount was used. The results show that the reinforced shear wall with GFRP polymer composite reinforcement has the ability to withstand displacements and greater lateral force than the steel reinforced steel walls.

In the recent years, study on the gradual deterioration of concrete under effect of corrosive factors such as acid attacks has been one of the most important research challenges in the concrete technology. On the other hand, in order to achieving the sustainable development, recycled concrete production by using of building and non building wastes, is interest for researchers more than past. So in this experimental study, for assessing the performance of self compacting concrete containing glass particles under sulfuric acid attack, 9 mixtures comprising 0, 5,10,15 and 20% glass particles as fine and coarse aggregates were considered. To determine fresh and hardened behavior, Slump, T50, V-funnel, J-ring, L-box and compressive and flexural strength tests were performed. In addition, in order to specify the durability of concrete samples, after placing them in the corrosive sulfuric acid solution with PH=1.5 for 30 and 60 days, mass loss and compressive and flexural strengths tests were carried out. Results showed that with increasing glass particles, fluidity, passing ability and dispersion of self compacting concrete increased. After 60 days immersion in sulfuric acid solution, compressive strength reduced for all samples. By adding glass particles, durability of self compacting concrete improved significantly compared to the control mix. Mass of all samples decreased after corrosion, which samples containing glass showed better performance in the mass loss compared to the control sample.

Engineering Geology and geotechnical parameters assessment is of the most important issues in successful tunnel design and construction operation. In urban areas, exact and complete reconnaissance of these parameters and site investigations are more critical as a result of the intensified effect of settlement and failure of the tunnels. Geotechnical parameters and hazards in tunnel route also affect the tunnel boring machine (T.B.M) selection and so they are challenging and very important issues. Shahid Motevasselian tunnel with a length of 10 Km. connects Shahid Sayyad Shirazi highway south wards (from north of Sepah Sq.) to Azadegan highway. There is a high geological diversity in geological units as a result of North- south direction of the tunnel and so it is too complicated to assess the parameters. In this study, as a good experience, the method of dealing with the complexities to achieve a reliable assessment of geological and geotechnical conditions is considered and also the possible hazards in different parts of the tunnel is determined. According to the geological and geotechnical situation, tunnel rout is divided to 3 distinct parts (northern part, middle part and southern part) and introducing the different soil types in terms of Geotechnical parameters, range of different parameters in any soil type is determined by combining the results of field and laboratory investigations, and finally, the material properties of each soil type determined as well as possible hazards likely in different parts of the tunnel route.
