The probative value of solitary reports is one of the important discussions in Islamic legal theory. Since the establishment of probative value for a thing in one science does not necessitate the probative value of the same thing in other sciences, and just as some
have accepted the probative value of solitary reports in jurisprudence while negating the same in other sciences like theology, exegesis and legal theory, we have attempted in this paper to study the general evidence provided for the probative value of solitary reports in the domain of legal theory and to classify the evidence in accordance with
the level of strength of each of the proofs i.e. Qurʾānic verses, sunnah, reason, the wont of the intelligent etc. in establishing the probative value of these solitary narrations in the field of legal theory.

Studying the commentaries and works related to the hadith corpus is considered part of the process that is necessary in order to understand the complexities of hadith. An overview of the commentaries on hadith written by the two schools of thought in Islam
brings to light substantial differences between the dates of commencement of these works between the Shīʿa and Ahl al-Sunnah. A study of texts related to the two primary Sunnī hadith compilations i.e. Ṣaḥīḥ Bukhārī and Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim on the one hand and [the Shīʿī compilations] al-Kāfī and Tahdhīb al-Aḥkām on the other hand reveals that Imami scholars commenced authoring commentaries on these important hadith works much later than their Sunnī counterparts. However, this is not the case when it comes to Nahj al-Balāgha. In this paper, we have attempted to study the factors that led to this difference and explain why the Imamiyya began writing commentaries later.

It is possible to state without reservation that the chain of transmission is one of the fundamental components of traditions. In the present era one of the important discussions wherein Orientalists have raised numerous doubts and questions relates to the issue of chains of transmission, which in turn have been countered by many rebuttals. The present paper aims to put forward a critical study of the views of Orientalists regarding the chains of transmission of hadith. The research herein is descriptive-analytical and is carried out with a critical outlook. First, we mention the historical genesis of the chain of transmission after which we proceed to study and critique the views of some important Orientalist scholars. The outcome of this research
shows that the goals of Orientalists and their theoretical principles are completely different from those of Muslim scholars. As such, their methodology in the field of Islamic hadith studies has yielded no benefit, and the evidence they have provided for their claims are inconclusive. There are many flaws in their arguments and these are discussed and studied in the present article.

The teachings that were passed down from the companions of Imam ʿAlī (a) to the later generations make up a part of a valuable Islamic heritage. In this research, we have studied the actual existence of works composed by the companions of Imam ʿAlī (a) as well as the form, quality, limits, content and the type of applicability and benefit
they hold for our present age. We have also explained that Muṣḥaf Fāṭimah (a) is a compilation of works that were penned by Imam ʿAlī (a) and left as part of the legacy of the Imāmah which was not made available to the public. Similarly, Kitāb Mītham al-Tammār, assuming it existed, was a copy of Kitāb ʿAlī (a) or a compilation of narrations
whereas no work from Ḥārith ibn ʿAbdillāh al-Aʿwar has reached us. Aṣbagh ibn Nubātah’s Maqtal al-Ḥusayn (a) was orally transmitted whereas Rabīʿah ibn Sumayʿ’s work which was on the process of collecting taxes is [to be] attributed to Imam ʿAlī (a) and its attribution to Rabīʿah is incorrect. The existence of the [early] work titled:Tasmiyatu man Shahida maʿa Amīr al-Muʾminīn fī Ḥurūbihi is not established. It is possible that it was an orally transmitted work which was only written down much later.

Towards the end of the first century [of the Hijra], the Muslim community was gradually faced with the maturing of various schools of thought. At this time, as different lands came under the domain of Islam, the cultural influences of other nations that had been conquered by the Muslims became amalgamated (such as the Iranian, Roman, Egyptian and Greek nations). As such, various trends of thought and types of knowledge entered the Muslim community. At this time, the Imams of the Ahl al-Bayt (a) were able to attract a following from some in the community who realized that it was only the Imams (a) who were the bearers of correct knowledge from the Prophet and hence considered them the primary source of emulation. They deemed the Ahl al-Bayt (a) to be the only ones who possessed this knowledge. The question that this paper addresses is how this thought took root among the Shīʿas, especially when the political and cultural climate was such that the government was completely detached from the Imams of the Ahl al-Bayt (a) and at times was even at odds with them.

Some dogmas and commonly held beliefs are sourced from inauthentic traditions which have been accepted without reflection and verification, and passed down over the centuries. One such belief is about how Ḥawwāʾ was responsible for Sliping Ādam through her wiles. In this article, we have attempted to evaluate the correctness of this belief from the viewpoint of both Shīʿa and Sunnī narrations. To this end, after studying all the narrations related to the Slip of Ādam, we have categorized them into three groups. The first group is made up of those narrations that consider Ḥawwāʾ as the one responsible for causing Ādam to stray. The second group portrays Ḥawwāʾ as Satan’s
partner in the temptation of Ādam. The third group considers Ḥawwāʾ to be free from any wrongdoing and innocent of this accusation, and portrays her to have fallen prey to the temptations and lies of Satan just like Ādam. By examining the chains of transmission and content of these narrations, it becomes evident these traditions have weak
chains. However, the content of the third group of traditions is in accordance with Qurʾānic teachings as well as some other authentic Shīʿa traditions, whereas the narrations of the first two groups are in contradiction with verses of the Qurʾān, even if they may agree with the text of the Torah. Since some of the narrations are from the People of the Book, there is a strong possibility that they were transferred from the traditions of the Jews.
