With regard to the importance of the Mediterranean region as a highly active region in the Northern Hemisphere winter, many studies have been devoted to the weather and climate of this region in general and the impact it receives from the North Atlantic storm track in particular. In 2014, Ahmadi-Givi et al. studied the interaction between the North Atlantic and Mediterranean storm tracks in winter 2005–2004 from the perspective of Rossby-wave propagation and introduced two different kinds of interaction which are referred to as the first and second kind of interaction in what follows. In this paper, based on the latter two kinds of interaction, we aim to identify and better understand the mechanisms of the impact of the North Atlantic storm track by investigating the way Rossby wave-packets are transferred to the Mediterranean region in the extended winter of 2012–2011. To this end, the Hovmoller diagrams, the wave envelope detection, wave activity diagnostics and the energetics are employed. For this extended winter, in total, five marked cases of wave-packet propagation from the North Atlantic to the Mediterranean region are detected. Results show that these five cases can be put into three categories. In the first category, there are two cases in which the wave packets reach Europe, in the upstream of the Mediterranean storm track and penetrate to lower latitudes and the southern branch mentioned in the work by Lee in 2000 and the first track mentioned in the work by Hoskins and Hodges in 2002. Therefore, these cases behave in the same manner of the first kind of interaction. In the second category, there are two cases in which the wave packets pass through the northern part of Europe, then propagate southeastward and join the southern branch along the second track introduced by Hoskins and Hodges in 2002, farther downstream from the first category. Therefore, the cases of the second category behave in the same manner of the second kind of interaction. In the third category, there is only one case in which the wave packet enters the upstream of the Mediterranean storm track and the southern branch in the west of Mediterranean region. However, wave activity diagnostics show that most of the wave activity propagates eastward in the Northern Europe along the second track with little penetration to the lower latitudes. Having signatures of both the first and second kind of interaction, the third category thus exhibits a mixed behavior. Detailed diagnostics are presented for two cases, one from each of the first and second categories. Overall, the fact that four of five cases are compatible with the two kinds of interaction adds to the credibility of this classification. It is also significant that on average, there is monthly one case of wave-packet propagation from the North Atlantic to the Mediterranean region. Finally, it is hoped that this work can be applied to the long-term data sets available, like that of NCEP/NCAR, in order to determine the statistical behavior of the wave packets and the interaction of the two storm tracks.

In geomagnetism, we have different methods for estimating the depths and shapes of the magnetic bodies in data interpretation. One of the essential and significant methods to describe the geological complexity of earth’s crust is modeling of magnetic data by inversion. The code of the inversion procedure is based on a least-squares algorithm, according to a criterion of balancing the weight of the data inaccuracies and the compactness of the solution. The interpretation of magnetic data can sometimes involve two steps, calculation of the direct problem (forward modeling) and solution of the inverse problem (inversion). Modeling and inversion of the total magnetic field and its compliance with the basic principle to minimize the cross-sectional area of the source bodies are described. The software code, with an interactive graphical interface, operates in MATLAB environment. The current paper has carried out a geomagnetic study on Siahlat region in order to explore iron ore. In addition to common methods in quantitative and qualitative interpretation in geomagnetic explorations, data modeling and inversion have been used. In data inversion we use a method that models and carries out inversion of the magnetic field through minimizing cross-sectional area of the source bodies. This inversion method works based on a weighted-damped least-squares algorithm. In this method the subsoil is considered to consist of horizontal prisms orthogonal to the survey profile and it is assumed that magnetic properties are constant in every prism. By changing the amount of magnetic susceptibility contrast in each pixel in spatial domain and comparing the calculated data with the observed data, inversion continues until an acceptable fitting between these data is obtained and the difference is minimized. The final answer which has the best fitting is selected as the final cross-section. The studied area is mainly composed of sedimentary rocks. These rocks include carbonate rock, sandstone and quartzite formations that are located in Binder, Zaigun, Lalun and Mila formations. Metamorphic rocks can also be seen in these formations. In the data inversion, the new mask signal method has been used. In fact, some segments of the signal that carry target information are selected quasi-automatically which is called mask signal, that is inversion operator is applied to the signal segments which are called useful signal. The use of mask signal method reduces the effects of noise and the convergence process is mainly focused on the useful signal. The experimental data used are related to an iron ore in Siahlat region in Semnan Province and inversion process has been carried out on two profiles. One of these profiles shows two slope anomalies, one of which is extended from about 10m depth to about 30m depth and the other from about 10m depth to about 20m depth. These two anomalies are in total 140m long and 3–4m thick. The other profile shows a slope anomaly with about 90m length and 4–5m thickness which almost starts from the surface of the ground and extends to the depth of 20–25m. Given the amount of magnetic susceptibility obtained through data inversion, the ore under study can be considered to be hematite.

In this study, using single-station dispersion curves, two-dimensional tomographic maps of group velocity have been estimated for Kopeh Dagh region in the northeast of Iran. An investigation of the structure of the lithosphere and the asthenosphere of the Kopeh Dagh region is of great interest because of the complex tectonics of this area. The Kopeh Dagh forms an NW–SE range of mountains separating the Turkmen (Turan) shield from central Iran. The belt is up to 3000 m in elevation, rising 2000 m above the Turkmen plains. It is highest and narrowest in its center and the east, becoming broader and lower towards the west, where it merges with the lowlands of the SE Caspian shore. The range is asymmetric, with a steep, linear and narrow NE side on which short, straight streams run directly from the high ground to the Turkmen plain. Its SW flank contains gentler slopes, is less regular, and contains a broader, more developed drainage network. The NE flank of the Kopeh Dagh is assumed to be underlain by ‘Hercynian’ basement of the Turan shield, while the range itself contains thick Jurassic–Cretaceous marine sediments overlain by Eocene marls with some andesitic volcanoclastic horizons. These, in turn, are overlain by thick marine Pliocene units in the west (which continue into the South Caspian Basin) merging eastward into a continental sequence of equivalent age, reflecting the diachronous emergence of the range. Although there is some evidence for local structural detachments in Jurassic evaporites, most of the late Cenozoic and active folds in the Kopeh Dagh are thought to have developed in the hanging-walls of basement-cored thrusts. There is no evidence for major salt thicknesses that can produce large-scale regional decollement levels, as in the Zagros. Earthquakes in the Kopeh Dagh involve mostly right-lateral strike-slip faulting trending N to NNW or reverse faulting parallel to the NW regional strike. The abrupt linear topographic front forming the NE margin of the Kopeh Dagh follows a fault zone referred to as the Main Kopeh Dagh or Ashkabad Fault. The analysis of the lateral variations in group velocities in low, intermediate and long period is an optimal tool for the identification of the main different tectonic features present in the complex Kopeh Dagh region. These parameters are sampling crust and upper mantle structures as period increases from 3 s to 35 s. Generally, shorter periods bring information about velocity properties at shallow depths, whereas longer periods sample deeper into the Earth’s upper mantle. To explore two-dimensional tomographic maps, in the time period of 2006 to 2013, local earthquakes with high signal-to-noise ratio recorded in six broad-band stations operated by International Institute of Earthquake Engineering and Seismology (IIEES) are selected. In the first step, initial corrections were performed and surface wave fundamental modes for 1075 earthquakes are isolated. Frequency- time analysis software (FTAN) is used to isolate fundamental mode from higher modes. By using this approach, single-station dispersion curves are calculated. The estimated group velocity dispersion curves are used to explore two-dimensional tomographic maps. Yanovskaya–Ditmar linear inversion method was used to achieve this goal. According to the obtained two-dimensional tomography maps, in low periods of 3 s and 5 s (shallow depth), we find a high-velocity anomaly in the south of Kopeh Dagh region that has sharply separated Alborz–Binalud zone from the Kopeh Dagh zone; so we can consider a separation boundary between Alborz–Binalud zone and Kopeh Dagh zone. In the period of 20 s, we have a high-velocity anomaly from north to south. At the west of this high-velocity anomaly, also there is a low velocity that makes a sharp boundary. In the period of 35 s, the tomographic model obtained reveals high- and low-velocity anomalies in the near distances of the uppermost mantle which have been separated from each other with a sharp boundary.

Magnetic rocks contain various combinations of induced and remnant magnetization that perturb the Earth's primary field. The magnitudes of both induced and remnant magnetization depends on the quantity, composition, and size of magnetic-mineral grains. Magnetic anomalies may be related to primary igneous or sedimentary processes that establish the magnetic mineralogy or they may be related to secondary alteration that either introduces or removes magnetic minerals. In mineral deposit exploration and its geoenvironmental considerations, the secondary effects in rocks that host ore deposits associated with hydrothermal systems are important. Geoenvironmental applications may also include identification of magnetic minerals associated with ore or waste rock from which desirable materials may be released. Such associations permit the indirect identification of materials such as those present in many copper deposits. This paper describes the results of the geomagnetic method for exploration of copper and gold mineralization in the Bashmaq polymetallic zone, in East Azerbaijan Province in the northwest of Iran. Obviously the main and efficient geophysical method for Cu-Au exploration is resistivity–IP method, whereas the magnetic method is usually considered as an indirect or secondary method. In this case study, copper mineralization is observable mainly as secondary minerals such as Malachite and Azurite with some iron oxides such as ologist which fill joints and fractures in faulty contacts. After primary geological surveys and determination of the location of mineralization out crops, a data network containing 31 East–West lines with 20 m space between lines and 10 m space between stations (reduced to 2 m in the mineralization zone) has been designed and around 3000 magnetic data have been gathered. Measurements are made by using a GEM proton magnetometer (GSM-19T) equipped with a DGPS system. In processing step, after removing daily variations of total magnetic anomaly and removing the trend effect, RTP (reduction to the magnetic pole) map was created and for interpretation, upward continuation maps were prepared for various distances. As a result of this survey, a low-amplitude negative signal with about 700 m length and a nearly NW–SE direction was detected. This signal is consistent with the outcrops which had been seen previously in the geological surveys. In addition, some positive signals related to magnetite and ologist mineralization in the study zone could be detected. Because these positive and negative signals are independent and lack a magnetic dipole structure, horizontal derivative filters such as analytic signal filter were not used. It is important to point out that we must consider the negative signal as the direct result of faulted zone containing mineralization of Cu-Au and IP method must be used for additional data acquisition. In modeling process, the results of processing and interpretation stages were used as input data for modeling and a 3D model of the faulted zone containing copper–gold mineralization was created. As a final result of this study, we can say that application of the magnetic method can serve for exploration of Cu-Au mineralization particularly in mineralization systems related to faults and fractures and that its results will be advantageous for optimal usage of the geoelectrical methods such as the induced polarity and resistivity.

Semi-automated interpretation methods in applied gravity and magnetic are based on the estimation of source parameters directly from the measured (processed) and/or transformed potential fields data. These methods are built on the introduction of a prior information on the properties of the desired solution, mainly at the mathematical level. In the majority of cases, the priori information is based on the recognition of a predefined source type response in the interpreted data. Transformations of geophysical potential fields (mainly in gravity and magnetic) play an important role in their processing and interpretation. Due to the harmonic property of potential field data derived from Laplace equation, it is possible to realize the operation of analytical continuation of them, upwards and downwards, in the source free domain. In the case, when we continue the data further from the sources, we speak about upward continuation, in the opposite direction (closer to the sources), we deal with downward continuation. This description of the operation is independent of the orientation of the vertical coordinate axis, which can be different depending upon the application (either pointing downwards or upwards). In geophysical data processing, analytical continuation is used in various situations: e.g. to compare airborne and ground geophysical potential surveys data (measured on different height levels). In the interpretation of potential field data, upward continuation is used to enhance the regional components in the original data by suppressing near surface sources manifestation. Conversely, the downward continuation is used to enhance the detection of shallower sources by extracting the local or residual anomalies. Downward continuation is also often used to calculate the depth of the important shallowest sources. A great variety of mathematical treatments of the classical analytical continuation problem, either in space or spectral domain, have been reported. Downward continuation of potential fields is a powerful, but very unstable tool used in the processing and interpretation of geophysical data sets. It has been analytically proved from potential field theory that in downward continuation, we can only continue an interconnected potential field function to the depth of its nearest source (its upper edge). In the very downward continuation process, it is common that even in depths shallower than first source, the noise is amplified. Treatment of the instability problem has been realized by various authors in different ways. The Tikhonov regularization approach is one of the most robust ones. Regularization approach (Tikhonov et al., 1968) gives a straightforward and elegant way to the solution of the problem of achieving stable downward continuation of potential fields. It is based on a low-pass filter, derived in the Fourier spectral domain, by means of a minimization problem solution. We highlight the most important characteristics from its theoretical background and present its realization in the form of a Matlab-based program (REGCONT) written by Pašteka et al (2012). As we have shown in the presented synthetic model studies and practical data transformation, the proposed regularization method gives stable results, which are relatively close to the correct values particularly at shallow continuation depths. In comparison with other approaches to stabilize downward continuation, it shows a relative small dependency on the sampling rate of the data sets to be interpreted. For the selection of the optimum regularization parameter value , the behavior of the constructed norm functions has been used. In the majority of cases, C-norm gave a better developed and necessary local minimum in the function shape, which is connected with the searched optimum value. Positions of local minima for the other Lp-norm functions give in general higher values of , which lead to more smooth solutions. On the other hand, in some cases these norm functions can give a better developed local minimum and so they can be better used for depth estimation purposes (mainly in the case of under-sampled data sets). We demonstrate very good stabilizing properties of this method on several synthetic models and also the real gravity and magnetic datasets respectively form Shavaz Iron ore and Yazd geological quadrangle. In Shavaz Iron ore, the depth to the top of the subsurface body was estimated 60 m which is in agreement with the drilling data. The main output of the proposed solution is the estimation of the depth to the source below the potential field measurement level. In this study, the REGCONT Matlab code was used.

As a high resolution, nondestructive and rapid geophysical tool, Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) provides the best method that can be used for locating superficial targets. A gallery of the aqueduct is well locatable by the GPR method due to distinct permittivity contrast between the target and the surrounding media. In this research work, as a 2D study, the GPR data acquisition was carried out using 250 MHz shielded antenna in Mashkan area near Kashan city. The target is not well visible in any processed radargram obtained from data acquisition. This paper aims at achieving the best processed section that is strongly similar to real conditions of the subsurface. In this circumstance, the proficiency of suitable processing algorithm will be very useful. To evaluate the ability of GPR, in addition to the suitable processing and appropriate interpretation of actual data, a model that is required based on the conditions of the subterranean features is designed and implemented. What is more prominent in this paper than that in previous similar studies carried out in Iran is the manipulation of modeling in GPR method and comparison of the results with the interpretation of actual data. In modeling, we generally tried to make the best simulation of wave reflection received from the underground layers obtained through the propagation of electromagnetic waves according to the targets and anomalies. Therefore the purpose of this article, according to the properties of the mentioned aqueduct, is to apply forward modeling and designing of model based on the expected conditions of the study at first. Then we want to investigate responses of electromagnetic waves when the processed section has been made by appropriate processing parameters. In this paper, modeling has been done based on a finite difference method. We can simulate complex consequential answers from complicated cases inasmuch as it has benefits such as flexibility, ability to simulate and model complex environments. Further, this method has acceptable responses as seen in cases when compared to other numerical methods, and it is more practical. The finite difference time domain (FDTD) method can model with high accuracy, when the properties of the underground layers are concerned. The final congenial model is acquired based on the characters of the layers, several parts and boundaries of this case study. The mentioned areas have been divided into cube-shaped sections named orthogonal grid cells. For each cell, the intensity of the electric and magnetic fields are considered according to the vertical and horizontal components of the invariable electromagnetic fields on the basis of the measured values of physical properties and the soil type. The resulting radargram is achieved through processing parameters such as Dewow filter, Spreading and Exponential Compensating (SEC), band-pass filtering and background removal. The soil of the study area contains sand, gravel and silt with an average electrical resistivity of about 200 Ωm. The analysis of traveling velocity of the electromagnetic wave is implemented using average electrical permittivity according to components of the soil. Our results show a close agreement between the model and the processed radargram, which consequently implies that the proposed processing procedure indeed provides reasonable results.

Analysis of the nature and structure of Sistan wind was carried out in this study using the 20×20km2 NNRP1 data dynamically downscaled by RegCM regional climate model and the observed data in the east of Iran Plateau during a 10-year period (2001–2010). Despite the fact that extensive studies have been devoted to the Sistan wind, but there are still many question and ambiguities about the nature and structure of the Sistan wind particularly in local and regional scale. This could be because most of the previous studies have consideredonly its large-scale structure. Indeed, they have used gridded data like NCEP/NCAR at 2.5° by 2.5°. Regional climate models are primary tools that can aid in our understanding of the many processes governing the climate system. For this purpose, the latest version of the model, RegCM4 (2010) was used. The model is flexible, portable and easy to use. It can be applied to any region of the world. In this article, at first, the statistical features of Sistan wind were studied in Zabol station. Then, the modeled data were compared with station data. With the confirmation of the lack of significant (at 5% significance level) difference between the model output and the station data, the nature and structure of the Sistan wind were analyzed using the model output. In general, the article is divided into two parts: the nature and structure of Sistan wind. In the part of nature, we make the conclusion that compared with 2.5 degrees resolution data, regional modeling provides more details of spatial distribution of effective systems acting withing the Sistan wind as well as a more accurate determination of its time of occurrence. Choosing an appropriate scale in this study revealed significant role of the Sistan low pressure and Khorasan mountains high pressure as the local systems responsible for the formation of local characteristics of the Sistan wind. Indeed, studying the temperature conditions of the region during the warm period (June, July, August and September) revealed that the Sistan plain and Loot plain experience the highest temperature and the region have high-temperature differences with the surrounding mountainous areas. The temperature conditions, along with the development of a local low-pressure system of thermal origin, over the Sistan and southwestern Afghanistan causes a cyclonic circulation over the region with strong positive values of relative vorticity together with an anticyclonic circulation in the mountainous regions. Study of the wind structure shows that the Sistan wind has two maximum cores around Khaf (Atishan plain) and Hamoon lakes (next to Zabol city), and indicates that the second core is more intense. The results also indicate that the Sistan wind reaches its maximum speed of up to 17 m/s at an altitude of approximately 500 m. In fact, the vertical profile of the wind velocity over the Sistan is strongly related to local topography. The occurrence of maximum wind intensity at night in the vicinity of the ground level as well as rapid changes in the vertical profile of wind indicate the presence of a nocturnal low-level jet (LLJ) in the main area of the activity of the Sistan in the east of Iran plateau. The initial investigation of the boundary layer structure and its changes during the night times reinforce the theory that the appearance of LLJ is more compatible with the theory of “inertial oscillation” put forward by Blackadar rather than the Holton’s theory.

Numerical weather prediction is an initial-boundary value problem. Hence, to estimate the future state of the atmosphere, its current state with as much accuracy as possible should be known. Part of the error in the outputs of limited area models is due to the imperfect initial conditions. Many researches have been conducted to develop various methods for improving the accuracy and quality of the initial conditions. At the time being, operational weather forecasting centers combine short-range weather forecasts and available observations using statistical methods to provide the initial conditions. This approach is known as data assimilation, whose purpose is defined by Talagrand (1997) as “using all the available information, to determine as accurately as possible the state of the atmospheric (or oceanic) flow.” In general, there are two strategies for data assimilation; intermittent and continuous approaches. In the intermittent approach, some sort of analysisschemes, such as successive correction, optimum interpolation or 3-dimensional variational (3D-VAR) is used to combine a short-range forecast as the background field with observations. The new analysis is then used as the initial condition of the model which is integrated forward in time. The resulted forecast may be used as the new first-guess for the next analysis. The analysis time intervals for such schemes typically range from 1 hr to 12 hrs. Disadvantages of such schemes, especially in the mesoscale, include analysis balance constraints, model spin-up, data sparseness, and data usage constraints. In continuous assimilation methods, on the other hand, one is able to assimilate observational data at its valid time, and produce smoothly varying model fields in all 4 dimensions. Due to the time-continuous aspect of such scheme, the model spin-up problem could be eliminated, and all available observations are used at their valid time. Since the model adjusts dynamically; inappropriate larger scale balances are not imposed. Examples of continuous assimilation methodologies include 4-dimensional variational (4DVAR) methods and Newtonian relaxation of observations called “observation nudging”. The former is expensive computationally and may not be feasible for real-time or operational assimilation systems. The Newtonian relaxation technique is described well in Stauffer and Seaman (1990), including the differences between analysis nudging and observation nudging. Analysis nudging is often considered to be a continuous assimilation method because the analyses are nudged into the model continuously over time. However, the analysis itself is a one-time product and thus analysis nudging has many of the disadvantages associated with intermittent assimilation schemes, including data sparseness and balance issues. One of the main disadvantages of observation nudging schemes is that the observations must be of a model variable, or directly convertible to one. Indirect observations, such as satellite-measured radiances, cannot be assimilated via observation nudging. In this paper, it is attempted to assimilate surface and upper air observations over Iran to estimate the initial condition of the model and prepare predictions with higher accuracy. The WRF mesoscale model was run for four selected cases to produce 72-h weather predictions with and without data assimilation. The model outputs are compared against corresponding verifying observations. Results showed significant improvements in precipitation forecasts when data assimilation is used, such that forecasted precipitation patterns look more similar to the observed ones. Also, calculated statistical verification scores showed around 18 and 15 percent improvement in the mean error (ME) and mean absolute error (MAE) respectively.

Meteorological radars, after decades of significant advances, have found their unsurpassed active remote sensing role in detecting hazardous weather phenomena, unraveling storms dynamic evolutionary processes, and characterizing precipitation using sophisticated, polarimetric based clutter characterization methods (Melnikov et al., 2003; Bringi et al., 1991; Zmic, 2005 and 2007). Advances, particularly with regard to digital processing and algorithm sophistication have made it possible to infer secondary products such as precipitation liquid water content, rainfall rate, and many other products. Weather radars carry certain ambiguities that are inherent nature of any remote sensing instruments. The ambiguities may arise from electronics stability issues, antenna accuracy, radio electromagnetic interference (RFI) from the natural as well as any man-made microwave emitters, and ground clutter contamination (Hubbert et al., 2003). Furthermore, non-polarimetric radars can cause additional errors as single power measurements can yield ambiguous results in the interpretation of cloud microphysics (Golestani et al., 1995; Bringi et al., 1991). An extensive calibration and validation (cal/val) campaign is an integral part of any successful modern-day weather radar operation (AMS meeting, 2001; Melnikov et al., 2003; Yilmaz et al., 2005). A cal/val program may include a combination of internal and external methods to calibrate radar return parameters and final products. Polarimetric capability further provides cross-calibration means to improve rainfall estimation, to classify precipitation types, and to differentiate weather echoes from those returned from biological scatterers (Yilmaz et al., 2005). Iranian Meteorological Organization (IRIMO) weather radar network — a combination of eight S- and C-band Doppler weather radars is designed to detect and track local mesoscale as well as large-scale meteorological systems entering the country from north-west, west, and south-west regions (Golestani et al., 2000; Golestani et al., 1999). To this date IRIMO network has not demonstrated a successful cal/val program. Tehran C-band polarimetric Doppler weather radar, which is the subject of this study, has not been able to utilize polarimetric capability to constrain ambiguities and enhance radar products. Furthermore, RFI sources have severely contaminated and practically disabled this radar along 45° northeast look angle over major population region. Anomalous propagation and beam blocking errors are also evident on the radar return. This paper presents a processing scheme to identify and remove RFI noise from radar returns. Processing algorithms for radar returns under this scheme are also presented. The algorithm consists of 1) anomalous points exceeding a simple upper threshold are identified and removed from the data set, 2) to minimizing beam broadening error, we divide the entire data domain into equal matrices 3) with respect to beam geometry all boxes are compared with the neighboring beam angles along the vertical structure of clouds, 4) for testing slantwise convection all boxes at lower tilt angle are examined with the 8 neighboring cells at upper tilt to extract the existence of symmetric instability, 5) finally by producing a history map of reflectivity, and statistical analysis of RFI noise, a spectral filter detects and removes RFI noises form radar data. This algorithm was implemented on a squall line data detected by the Tehran weather radar on the 31st of March 2009. The results of the data analysis show the ability of the processing filters in removing RFI noise and detecting convective line and stratiform clouds.

The main purpose of this study is to analyze structural features in the Strait of Hormuz by using subsurface geophysical data. One of the main tasks is, therefore, to interpret 75 lines of the PC2000 seismic lines acquired by the Dutch and Norwegian Statoil company in the waters of the Persian Gulf and Oman Sea in 2000. In addition to interpreting the horizon, these data are used to understand the evolution of stratigraphic–structural history of this region. Situated in 55°–56° E longitude and 25°30'–27° N latitude, the study area is located in the south of Iran in the Strait of Hormuz which is known as Block E for the National Iranian Oil Company. The size of the Hormuz study area is in the order of 10000 km2. Within the area, there is one large island, Qeshm Island, and several smaller ones. Because the study area is a submarine, there is no possibility of direct examination of existing structures; therefore 2D seismic reflection data and submarine drilling data (8 wells) are used for modeling the subsurface structures and structural analysis in this area by Petrel software. Eight offshore wells were tied to the seismic data, providing the basis for the definition of horizons that varied in age from Early Cretaceous to Pliocene. The seismic data have been loaded to Petrel software in SEG-Y tape format. The SEG-Y format is generally accepted as a common format for both marine and land seismic data. The results have shown that in parts of the area, salt diapirism began after sedimentation of the Hormuz salt by downbuilding mechanism, and in other parts it has been affected by Mesozoic and Cenozoic reactivated basement faults coupled with buoyancy force. Two growth stages, active and passive, are known for diapiric structures. Also, the salt dome structures are related to some basement faults trending NE–SW, which provided a path for upward movement of salt. Most of these faults are concentrated in the eastern Hormuz Province where structural complexity is justified due to the effect of Oman and Zagros orogenies. The structuring as seen today is mainly the result of the Upper Cretaceous to Early Tertiary Oman Orogeny and the Late Miocene to Recent arrival of the southward advancing Zagros Orogeny. Most faults below the Intra-Mishan unconformity are thrust and reverse faults. The radial normal faults are predominant on top of the all diapirs. Radius of influence of individual diapirs is about twice of their diameter. Furthermore, folds are shorter and wider as compared to those in the north-western part of the Zagros, such that the wavelength is about 23 times of amplitude. The measurements carried out on the 39 interlimb angle folds reveals that 2/56 percent are open fold and 97/43 percent are gentle folds (50 percent have 140-160 interlimb angle, 34/21 percent have 160-180 interlimb angle and 15/78 percent have 120-140 interlimb angle).
