Balance is one of the fitness factors that plays an important role in sports skills performance and helps the athletes to keep fit and achieve their goals. Different sports need different amount of balance according to their characteristics and requirements and different athletes have different abilities to maintain balance. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess reliability of functional balance tests in semi-professional adolescent and young girls of several selected sports. 66 semi-professional athletes of badminton, basketball and taekwondo from two groups of adolescents (10-15 years old) and young subjects (20-30 years old) who had a general health participated in this study. Static balance tests (Stork, Romberg, Sharpened Romberg, BESS and Angel), semi-dynamic (Y), and dynamic (Time to Get Up and Go and Tandem Walking) in 3 scoring stages were conducted by the examiner. To reduce learning effect, each scoring stage was performed with a 72-hour interval. Descriptive statistics were used to calculate data mean and standard deviation; inferential statistics with ICC test were used to determine the reliability of tests at a significance level of P≤0.05. Results showed that the Stork, Angel and Y tests in all three sport fields in adolescent and young groups and T.G.U.G in badminton and taekwondo in young group were reliable. According to these results, reliable tests can be recommended to evaluate athletes’ balance for a better performance and a prevention of injury during exercise activities.

Fatigue causes afferent feedback disorder, muscle timing disorder and injury in organs. In this study, the effect of a functional fatigue protocol on pattern and onset of electromyography activity of selective lumbo-pelvic and peroneal muscles. 13 healthy female taekwondo athletes (mean age 20.92±1.25 years, weight 53.69±4.17 kg, height 166.92±5.00 m and activity experience 7.92±1.75 years) took part voluntary in this study. Firstly, the onset of EMG activity of erector spinae, quadratus lumborum, gluteus medius and peroneus lunges muscles was recorded during single leg jump-landing. Then, subjects participated in the fatigue protocol and EMG activity of muscles was recorded again. The analysis of variance showed significant differences in onset of muscle activity in pretest and posttest (P≤0.0005), but this pattern showed no significant differences in pretest and posttest. Paired t test showed a faster onset of each four muscles after fatigue; that was significant in quadratus lumborum, gluteus medius and peroneus lunges. But it was not significant in erector spine. As a result, central nervous system is more sensitive in fatigue condition when it predicts more injury risk and employs muscles sooner so that it can protect joints in high-risk conditions. So it attempts to recall motor strategies to prevent probable injuries sooner.

Correct kinematics is an effective factor to reduce musculoskeletal problems. The aim of this study was to compare muscle activity during single-leg squat (SLS) in a group with dynamic knee malalignment (DKMG) and normal cases. 23 active females (mean age of 21.86±2) participated in this comparative study. Lower limb Muscle activity (RMS), pelvic drop angle (PDA), trunk side bend (TSB) and knee valgus (KV) was recorded during SLS. Independent t test was used to compare variables and significance level was 0.05. The results showed no significant differences in PD (P=0.86) and TSB (P=0.25), but KV was greater in DKMG than the control group (P=0.00). Although %MVC of all muscles was greater in DKMG than the control group, only rectus femoris (P=0.04) and gluteus maximus (P=0.05) showed significant differences. Also, a weak correlation between KV with TSB (r=0.33) and rectus femoris activity (r= -0.37) was observed. Findings showed that DKMG had more muscle activity especially in rectus femoris and gluteus maximus which showed the important role of these muscles in controlling lower limb alignment during functional movements. Also, dynamic knee malalignment may deviate trunk towards weight bearing leg for substitution during SLS.

The aim of this study was to compare isometric strength and range of motion (ROM) of lower extremity in female athletes with and without dynamic knee valgus. 48 healthy female athletes (age range 15-18 years) in two groups: those with dynamic knee valgus during squat movement that was corrected by a heel lift (n=24) and those with no dynamic knee valgus (n=24 as the control group) with no injury in the past participated in this study. Maximum isometric strength was measured in kilograms using a hand-held dynamometer and active ROM was measured in degrees with a standard plastic goniometer. Independent t test and MANOVA were used to analyze data (P≤0.05). The results showed that the group with dynamic knee valgus had significantly lower mean ankle dorsiflexion ROM (with right knee) (F1.46=5.503, P=0.023) and isometric strength of ankle plantar flexion (F1.46=4.187, P=0.046) than the control group. No other significant differences were observed between the groups. The subjects with dynamic knee valgus exhibited tight and weak lateral and medial gastrocnemius muscles. This result indicated that decreased ankle dorsiflexion ROM as a factor affecting the alteration of movement pattern of lower extremity and consequently a risk factor for knee injuries must receive the attention of clinicians and trainers.
