“The imaginary” and “imagination” are the essences of art and literature. However, all through history, a long-held dispute has always revolved around what they actually stand for. From illusion to dream and inspiration and divinities; from the ancient Greece to the era of Islamic philosophy and mysticism, all are linked to such concepts as imagination and the imaginary.  Although these two terms are close to each other in meaning, they are actually different. “The imaginary” played an important role in Islamic mysticism of 4th to 6th centuries (AH), and even later. In the fifth century (AH), Sohrevardi defined the symbolic universe of the imaginary. But in that period of time, i.e., the medieval period, fantasies and imaginations were thought to be the equivalents to superstition and insanity in the West. The Western Post-Romantic era witnessed a growing inclination to Eastern ideologies and concepts, where Henry Corbin and Gaston Bachelard had a pivotal role in the introduction of Eastern knowledge and beliefs to the West, which led to serious changes in the Western perspective on imagination and imaginology, as well as extension of novel methods in literary criticism of the time. But it was not before the twentieth century when Gilbert Durand, relying heavily on Eastern and Islamic teachings and the preceding approaches, took influential steps in recognizing the nature and the structure of imagination, according to anthropological studies. In this library research, in addition to defining and explicating the two similar terms of the imaginary and imagination, we examine the eastern and western-oriented theories which were the origins of Gilbert Durand’s main theory. Accordingly, one can conclude that the contemporary Western imaginology and imaginary criticism approaches are basically indebted to the accomplishments of the Islamic scholars of the medieval

Following the conflicts and doubts cast by Fakhr Razi on Avicenna’s symbolic reference to the symbolic-allegorical tale of Salaman O-Absal in the first admonition of the ninth Namat of Esharat O-Tanbihat, Khajeh Nasir, in refuting this claim, expounded on Avicenna’s accounts through a narrative of Salaman O-Absal which he had found consistent with Avicenna’s remarks.  Jozjani also mentions Salaman O-Absal in Avicenna’s works and Avicenna makes a mention of “Absal” in his “Ghaza O-Ghadar” treatise. Considering the existing evidence, the tale of two brothers, Salaman and Absal, could be considered as Avicenna’s allegorical-symbolic tales. After Khajeh Nasir, other commentators of Esharat O-Tanbihat and other works of Avicenna, considered Khajeh Nasir’s Salaman O-Absal as the third allegorical-symbolic tale of Avicenna; merely relying on Khajeh Nasir’s statements and without further explorations; while there were no documents other than the unsubstantiated claims made by Khajeh Nasir. This study, through providing firm evidence, refutes such an assumption and declares that there is no tale entitled Salaman O-Absal written by Avicenna. Besides, the mentioned first admonition of the ninth Namat of Esharat O-Tanbihat is not Khajeh Nasir’s narration of the tale Salaman O-Absal but, actually, is the legendary Greek tale of Salaman O-Absal translated by Hannis Ibn Ishaq.

The largest volume of mystical narratives in Persian literature is devoted to Mathnavi. This has caused neglecting the potentials of other forms of narrative and the tendency of mystics to tell stories in those forms. This necessitates new studies that can examine the potentials of other poetic narrative forms and their features. One of the important functions of storytelling in Sufism is sharing spiritual experiences in form of a short narrative. The mystic storytellers for transferring their spiritual experiences, which are uniquely characterized as condensed and fleeting, seek a poetic form that reflects the condensed narrative of their intuition as concisely and cohesively as possible. Quatrain (Ruba'i), as one of the oldest forms of Persian literature, due to its structural features, can display the transience of the spiritual experiences of quatrain-writer mystics; besides representing unity and integrity. In this research, conducted through descriptive-analytical method and from the viewpoint of the presence of narrative elements in Attar's Mokhtarnameh, we found that in 261 quatrains (out of a total of 2279), the unity of the mystical experiences of the narrator is displayed in the most compressed form and with entanglement and integrity of form and content; more than other storytelling formats. The main characters of narrative quatrains are the lover (mystic) and the beloved, and since the narration occurs in the mystic’s subconscious mind, the place and time are often vague and general. In narrative quatrains, Attar has connected the experience to mystical interpretation of the narrative through deploying imagination and poeticness, and has turned the crude form of his narrative into an artistic one (plot).

Sufi interpretations of non-sacred affairs could be categorized as linguistic and non-linguistic phenomena. In this article, the part of Rumi’s interpretation, which is reported in Managhebol al-Arefeen, is examined. Like many mystics, Rumi deploys the interpretations of non-sacred affairs to expand his spiritual experiences. According to Gadamer's Hermeneutic views, such interpretations have been made through the process of reader’s dialogue with the text. The interpreter, while facing the representations and in dialogue with in, based on his mental configurations and concepts existing in his mind, makes an interpretation of them which is consistent with his biases, prejudices and lived experiences. In such kinds of interpretations, every heavenly representation is reflective of an inner image in the mind of the mystic. Such associations are formed on the basis of similarity, proximity and contradiction and in the mystic language they appear in rhetorical forms such as alliteration, uslub al-hakim, similes, personifications, symbols, metonymy and paradoxes.

Attar’s Mantiq Ut-Tair is a magnificent masterpiece in mystical literature that through presenting the most essential ontological issues invites humans to contemplate them. This interdisciplinary study seeks to analyze the journey in parallel universes in Mantiq Ut-Tair based on the principles of quantum physics to achieve a rational plan for responding to the paradoxes of this literary work; since in quantum mechanics actualizing all probabilities and paradoxes is feasible. According to the findings, Attar is in search of an exact twin of his own (Simorgh) in another world by creating such a story. In view of the contradiction in time travel, the starting part of the journey is based on the hypothesis of "compatible dates" and the final part of the journey is based on "periodic dates". The mirror symbolizes the "Wormholes" (launching platform to the parallel world) and "Mount Ghaf", like the "event horizon", is a passageway to enter other life dimensions along the borderline between this world and the parallel world. In addition, there is a structural palindrome among them and Nur Alnur can also be a factor for launching forwards into a parallel universe. Attar intends to reach the truth of universe by attaining integrity and completeness. Einstein also intends to read God's mind through integrity theory. However, both Attar and physicists believe that one cannot enter parallel worlds by the existing knowledge.

The theme of "Angel" in Hafez thoughts, in comparison with other texts of Sufism, has undergone serious semantic transformations. Most of the well-known scholars are of the opinion that Hafez considers love as the divine deposit, which is reserved only for human beings, and of which angels are deprived. However, the comparison of the codes in Hafez poetry with other works of Sufism does not support the validity of this proposition.  Hafez’s claim that angels are deprived of love is controversial because it contradicts Muslim mystics' general approach, which declares the general dominance of love in the created world. It seems that Hafez was chiefly affected by Attar Neyshaburi and believed in the general dominance of love in the whole created world, although he held that the perfection of love which is the pain of love belongs exclusively to human beings. Nevertheless, the scholars who study Hafez have largely interpreted this view of Hafez differently and through these interpretations many of the concepts found in Hafez poetry turn out to be beyond the comprehension of readers. This article attempts to explicate one of the fundamental metaphors in Sufi texts, "Dordi-e-Dard" (the remains of pain) and compare its related propositions in the poetry of Hafez and other Sufi writings, and then reviews the theme of "Angel" and its share of love in the thoughts of Hafez.

Ibn Arabi’s symbolic and metaphorical look at natural and geometric elements provided the basis for the emergence of unity of existence metaphors in Persian literature. His dual metaphors, which often refer to the emergence of multiplicity out of unity, penetrated the works of other Persian mystic poets and literary scholars. The point and circle is one of these dual metaphors that points to the simultaneous contradiction and identicalness of creator and created. This metaphor has been studied in Ibn Arabi’s works from various aspects and different features of unity point and multiplicity circle have been explicated. Sometimes the relationship between the point and circumference of the circle is considered through the radius of the divine names; other times the circular structure of the circle and its identicalness at the beginning and end of the curve of descent and ascent are referred to, and sometimes renewal of essences is explained through applying point of fire metaphor. After Ibn Arabi, this view was adopted in the literary writings of the mystics like Sadeddin Hamuyeh, Fakhreddin Araqi, Azizeddin Nasafi, Sheikh Mahmoud Shabestari, Shirin Mahadi Maraghei, Shah Nematollah Vali, Shah Daei Shirazi and the commentators of Fusush al-Hekam; either in the same way or with new similarities. In this article, we will examine the metaphorical application of point and circle in these works. The research methodology is library-oriented and based on the works of the above-mentioned poets and authors.
