One of the fundamental policies of the Prophet in the field of education and establishing an ideal society based on religious teachings is the issue of ‘naming’. In order to build culture and identity, along with the Qur’anic commands, the Messenger of Allah aimed – in all relevant areas such as selecting beautiful names for children, refining and changing adults’ names, nicknaming, reforming and transforming tribal names and names of places and so forth – to remove pre-Islamic (Jahiliyah) elements from the naming culture, and to improve vitality and development in the community through the selection of honorable names consistent with the religious culture. In addition, he avoided reprehensible names and favored the selection of beautiful names even for his own personal property. Thus, the Prophet made the choosing of gracious and honorable names for all phenomena (persons and items) part of the public demand and the dominant culture.

The purpose of the present paper is to focus on the eleventh year of the Islamic calendar in order to achieve a new reading of the Ridda / Apostasy movement and to prove that the Quraysh caliph had meant by Islam to address most of the Arabs living in the Arabian Peninsula. Due to the prominence and representation of the elements of politics and power, this study looks through a discursive lens on the subject, and accordingly the Quraysh discourse is analyzed within the theoretical framework of Laclau and Mouffe. Together with the documented demonstration of the agency and determinative influence of politics in the field of religion, especially in the mentioned period, the reading obtained in the framework of this theory of Islamic history and in connection with the disputed issue of apostasy proves that subjects of the Quraysh Islamic discourse had been literally enslaved (taslīm), not Muslim (i.e. one who surrenders). What confirms this claim is the variable and volatile definition of the dominant discourse relating to Islam and being a Muslim.

Water is one of the important elements in the decoration of Iranian buildings and monuments. In fact, water has been employed in forms including the pool, fountains and streams with exquisite drawings manifested in buildings belonging to the early period of Islamic architecture. Investigations of the present study can demonstrate that certain styles used in water design during the period are of remarkable importance for further studies in areas of welfare, symbolism, and aesthetics. Due to the desert climate of the land, a number of such styles had been common in ancient Iran. And after the dominance of Islam, as a consequence of combining with religious requirements and the Qur’anic pattern for ‘Paradise’ this reached its peak and was replicated also in other Islamic lands. In addition to introducing these styles, the present study takes a comparative look at the roots, backgrounds and aesthetic aspects of these works.

The Dabuyids is a local dynasty who managed to dominate over an area known as Padashwargar for more than a century. They came to power when on the one hand the Sassanid Empire was on the decline, and on the other hand the Arab invasion had become irresistible. However, the Dabuyids managed to take root in such circumstances and survive powerfully for a long time. The Dabuyids even remained alive during the decline and fall of the great contemporary rules of Sassanid Empire and Umayyad Caliphate, without losing the essence of its local rule. It seems that they took the best advantage of their specific geographic location, as well as depending on military power and political relations and finally maintaining the ancient values and traditions and relying on their own local acceptance, in order to ensure their continuity and survival. The present study examines relevant sources about such causes and reasons.

The 1288 AH famine in Khorasan has been the subject of numerous studies having examined the event with special focus on its causes and short-term effects as well as the reaction of the people and the state to it. This approach has led to general statements and unjustified generalization of the results of such research to the whole Iran. The present article is a case study of the 1288 AH famine in Khorasan and examines, in addition to the famine itself, its consequences on the local economy of the province. The findings of this research prove the fallacy of generalizing the results of general investigations of the famine to the whole country; and in addition it shows that all areas of Khorasan were not equally affected by the famine. Instead, the catastrophe increased the wealth and population in the northern provinces at the expense of the loss for central and southern provinces. Furthermore, the famine was associated with mortality, migration and population displacement, which in turn leads to more skepticism as regards the validity of the statistical data of some resources. Moreover, the local economy, apart from the damages it received, soon experienced transformations in the pattern of land ownership at the expense of private property and the type of cultivation, whereby each of these developments were the origin of subsequent changes in Khorasan.

After its conquest, Khorasan came under the administration of the Islamic Caliphate and found particular importance due to its possession of natural resources and its location on the international trade route. The region excelled in local industries, agricultural products and the transition of Eastern goods, and used to provide the required resources of Islamic states. Some of the policies of the Umayyads in Khorasan were concentrated on taking advantage of these opportunities and strengthening the economic capabilities of its government. The sources of Umayyad fiscal revenue in Khorasan were divided
into three categories: religious, administrative, and conventional. The present article aims to identify these sources, and to reflect upon their backgrounds and consequences. The method of this study is historical and analytical based on Islamic sources. The findings suggest that an important part of the Umayyad financial policy in Khorasan had been influenced by changes in the financial rules and the application of traditional and conventional rules. As a result, except in special and limited cases of the acceptance of Islam, this did not cause any change in Khorasan’s financial resources. The consequence is the spreading of public discontent and the emergence of various social movements.
