Olive is one of the most important horticultural crops in Iran, especially in Guilan, Zanjan and Qazvin provinces. There are many pests in olive groves. Olive psylla, Euphyllura straminea Loginova. (Hem.: Psyllidae) is the most important insect pest of olive during flowering of trees in winter and the beginning of spring in Iran.
    Material and
    Methods
In this research, the effect of kaolin powder (Sepidan®WP), on the developmental stages of the pest was evaluated in Guilan province during the growing season of 2012 and 2013. The treatments consisted of two kaolin concentrations of 3 and 5% and two treated with insecticide (diazinon EC 60% Volk oil 5%) and control (water spraying) which were compared using a layout of a randomized complete block design.
    Results
Results showed that in insect control treatments at 7, 14 and 21 days after spraying, diazinon insecticide, respectively, was 88.35, 80.43, 71.25%, kaolin 5% had 41.80, 35.22, 32.55% efficiency and kaolin 3%, 40.27, 25.12 and 16.12% respectively. On nymphs, the diazinon insecticide was 92.19, 89.25, 79.63, kaolin 5%, 61.06, 47.61, 42.43%, and kaolin 3%, 26.46, 31.10 and 22.61 % respectively. On the eggs, diazinon insecticide caused 31.16, 37.67, 47.17% efficiency, kaolin 5%, 28.07, 31.61, 36.61, efficiency, kaolin 3% 28.46, 25.18, and 26.32%, respectively. In the second year of the experiment, the results were the same as the first year.
    Discussion
According to the results, although the diazinon insecticide had the greatest effect on reducing the population of olive psylla, with regard to the necessity of reducing the application of chemical pesticides, Kaolin 5% treatment is recommended to be effective in reducing the number of nymphs, which is the main cause of damage

The Jujube lappet moth, Streblote siva (Lefebvre) (Lepidoptera: Lasiocampidae), is one of the most important polyphagous pest in ornamental and forest communities’ species including Conocarpus erectus, Ziziphus spp. and Acacia ampliceps in southern provinces of Iran such as Bushehr, Khuzestan and Hormozgan. This insect was not a significant economic damage in the past, but since huge planting of imported C. erectus tree in urban and industrial areas in these regions, it has become a serious threat to urban open spaces. This study was conducted to determine morphology, biology and dynamism of S. siva.
    Mateials and
    Methods
The region of Bushehr was chosen in order to study the population dynamics and biology of S. siva following the stratified random sampling program.
    Results
The results showed that the eggs of the insect are large white-brown. The surface of the eggs is brown spotted and they are denser on the egg's poles. S. siva has 6 instars larva. The pupae are in thin sturdy silk cocoons on the branches and trunk of their hosts. According to the results, S. siva spends May to September which is a very hot period in the region, as pupae begins their oversummering and overwintering. In early October, the adult's moths appear gradually and after mating, they start laying eggs on leaves and branches. The insect has two autumnal and a spring generation in cool winters and one autumn and one spring generation in cold winters. The autumn first generation had a clear pick point and the average population gradually declined to the lowest amount in early November. The spring generation adults appeared gradually since the middle of March.
    Discussion
Forests conservation, protection and urban open spaces are very important due to the extreme climates, dust and environmental pollution of the southern regions of Iran. In these circumstances, Conocarpus erectus has been planted in wide areas because of extreme compatibility, resistance to environmental stress and its rapid growth. The results of this research can provide the basic information necessary for the pest management (IPM) of S. siva.

Fusarium wilt of melon (Cucumis melo L.), caused by Fusarium oxysporum Schlechtend: Fr. f. sp. melonis W.C. Snyder & H. N. Hans., (Fom), inflicts important yield losses in melon crops worldwide. Fusarium wilt is difficult to control even if long crop rotations are used because Fom colonizes the roots of a broad taxonomic range of plants. Genetic diversity of plants determines their potential for improved efficiency and hence their use for breeding, which eventually may result in enhanced disease resistance. One of the important approaches to resistance to Fom race 1.2 is hybridization and subsequent selection. Parents’ choice is the first step in plant breeding program through hybridization. In order to benefit transgressive segregation, genetic distance between parents is necessary. The higher genetic distance between parents, the higher heterosis in progeny can be observed. The main objective of this study was to capture the potential genetic diversity between melon genotypes by using cluster analysis. The results of present study have been used in selection of appropriate parents for breeding program
    Materials And Methods
In this study, 57 Iranian endemic melon genotypes were screened against race 1.2 of Fom. Artificial inoculations were performed with a suspension of 1 × 106 conidia/ml at one to two true leaf stage. Disease reactions of the genotypes were scored using a 1 to 5 scale. Five traits including phenol compounds (PCs), area under disease progress curve (AUDPC), disease severity, Percentage of dead plants and latent period were assessed.
    Result
Analysis of variance showed significant differences between genotypes for all the traits. The highest and lowest AUDPC were observed in Shadegani-2 and Isablle, respectively. According to PCs results, the highest and lowest PCs were observed in Isablle and Khatoni sang bas, respectively. Also, based on cluster analysis, the genotypes were classified into five groups.
    Discussion
On the basis of the greenhouse experiments, significant genetic diversity among melongenotypes, and resistant and susceptible ones were recognized. The results revealed that resistant genotype(s) of melon demonstrate increased accumulation of PCs in response to Fom 1.2 isolate Maharloo. The highest genetic distance was observed between genotypes of second and fifth groups. Accordingly, the crossing between genotypes with maximum distance can form the basic population for the study of action and identify the gene(s) involved in tolerance to Fusarium wilt.

Wheat is one of the most important field crops in Kermanshah province. Although aphids are not among the key pests of wheat, their population and damage can increase in suitable conditions. Sequential sampling methods for estimating the population of aphids in wheat fields can be useful in pest management as they promote effective use of time to estimate population density. In this study, spatial dispersion and a fixed precision sequential sampling program were investigated for Sitobion avenae (Hom.: Aphididae) population in wheat fields of SarPol-e Zahab, Kermanshah province.
    Materials And Methods
A systematic weekly sampling was conducted in two selected wheat fields in SarPol-e Zahab region during years 2015 and 2016. Samples were collected by X-shaped movement in the field and totally 30 plants were selected randomly in each occasion. Taylor power law and Iwao’s patchiness indices were used to assess the spatial dispersion of the aphid population. A sequential sampling plan was also developed using the fixed-precision method of Green for estimating the density of adults, nymphs, and total population.
    Results
The results showed that Taylor power law fitted better to data than Iwao’s patchiness regression. The sample size increased with increasing precision level from 0.25 to 0.1 and it also increased when the population density decreased. At precision level of 0.1, average sample number for estimating the total population of aphids was different from 150 spikes in a density of 15 aphids/spike to 200 spikes in a density of 0.1 aphids/spike. At precision level of 0.25, the required sample for population estimation ranged from 25 spikes for a density of 15 aphids/spike to 30 spikes in a density of 0.1 aphid/spike.
    Discussion
According to the results, sequential model at the precision level of 0.25 is recommended to sample S. avenae population, because of reducing the cost and sampling time. The results obtained from this study can be useful to population management of aphids in wheat fields of SarPol-e Zahab region.

    Background And Objectives
Silicon is the most common element in soil that has beneficial effects in enhancing tolerance to biotic and abiotic stresses in plants. The addition of silicon to plant nutrient solution causes decreasing sodium concentration, increasing plant growth, having positive effects on plant reproduction and increasing mechanical resistance. Silicon also affects absorption and translocation of several macro- as well as micronutrient elements and imposes the formation of precipitates under the cuticle, reduces plant transpiration and causes resistance to stresses such as side effects of excessive phosphorus and heavy metals (high concentration of manganese and aluminium) or salinity. Silicon salts such as sodium and potassium silicate causes significant reduction in growth, asexual organ reproduction and dry weight of hyphae, and also prevent the germination of cysts in some plant pathogens such as Phytophthora species. Application of silicon salts before and after inoculation of sterilized soil with Phytophthora pistaciae significantly reduces the disease by reducing the percentage of colonized roots and the mortality of the broad bean. In this study the in vivo activities of sodium and potassium silicate in controlling P. pistaciae and Rhizoctonia solani as a control were evaluated.
    Material and
    Methods
To study the effect of sodium silicate (0.25, 0.5 and 0.7 mM) and potassium silicate (1, 2 and 4 mM) to increase the resistance of broad bean as a test plant against P. pistaciae and R. solani a factorial experiment in a completely randomized design with salt treatments before and after inoculation was conducted. In the case of R. solani as a control only 5.0 mM of sodium silicate and 2 mM of potassium silicate were applied. The level of catalase, peroxidase, polyphenol oxidase, proline, total protein and carbohydrates in plants as well as pH and the electrical conductivity of soil were examined.
    Results
The results showed that silicon salts may enhance broad bean resistance to P. pistaciae and R. solani by increasing the level of catalase, peroxidase, polyphenol oxidase and total protein and decreasing proline. None of the salts had any effects on the level of carbohydrate content of the plants and pH and the electrical conductivity of soil.
    Discussion
According to the results, it can be concluded that the role of silicon salts in promoting broad been tolerance could be due to increasing the activities of the antioxidant enzymes which in turn reduced the oxidative damages of reactive oxygen species produced under disease stress.

    Background And Objectives
Honey bees hygienic behavior is the primary natural defense against Varroa mite, American foul brood and chalk brood disease and are controlled by genetic and environmental factors. Hygienic behavior includes of three stages of detecting, uncapping and removing of infected or dead brood from the colony. However, this behavior is quite rare, with only 10% of unselected colonies showing high levels of hygiene. Beekeepers can potentially increase this by screening colonies for hygiene and breeding from the best.
    Materials and Methods
In this study hygienic behaviors and infestation rates of Varroa mite is evaluated in bee colonies. The study was accomplished on 100 honey bee colonies. The rate of uncapping and removal of dead broods was determined in resistant and control colonies. To determine the hygienic behavior, liquid Nitrogen was used to kill pupae. The number of uncapped and discharged cells were counted in the three periods of 24, 48 and 72 hours after the pouring of liquid nitrogen.
    Results
According to results the examined colonies exhibited noticeable phenotypic variation for Hygienic behavior. At the first stage (spring) %21 and in the second stage (summer) %18 of colonies showed good hygienic behavior. Uncapping rates in days showed significant correlation with removing rates in the same recording day (P
    Discussion
The results of this research and other studies conducted by other Iranian researchers show that Iranian honeybee has shown higher hygienic behavior against Varroa mite. In this study resistant and stable colonies were selected for bee breeding projects at the end of the year. By selecting and implementing good breeding programs, it is possible to increase the rate of these behaviors in order to create Varroa mite-resistant populations. It seems that hygienic colonies selecting for resistance to Varroa mite will have satisfactory results in the future.
