    Background and Objectives
The European corn borer, Ostrinia nubilalis (Hübner), is an important pest of corn in Iran. Intercropping systems has been proposed as one approach that can be used for reducing pest density and improving biodiversity of natural enemies and crop yield. Therefore, the present research assessed the densities of immature stages of O. nubilalis, biodiversity of its predators, and parasitism rates of immature stages in experimental plots where corn was grown either as monoculture or strip-intercropped with sunflower. We also evaluated the effect of the intercropping systems with natural infestation of O. nubilalis on corn yield.
    Materials and Methods
In this research, the influence of five strip-intercropping systems of corn (C) and sunflower (S)including 2C: 2S, 4C: 2S, 8C: 2S, 4C: 4S, and 2C: 4S along with corn monoculture was studied on density of imaginal stages of O. nubilalis, its natural enemies biodiversity, the percentage of parasitized eggs and larvae, and the grain yield of corn and the percentage of grain yield loss in an experimental field in Ardabil region in 2016 and 2017. These experimets were conducted in a randomized block design with four replicates.
    Results
The densities of imaginal stages (eggs, larvae and pupae) of O. nubilalis in intercrops were significantly lower than corn monoculture. Among the natural enemies of this moth, Orius niger (Wolff), Lydella thompsoni Herting, Bracon hebetor Say and Trichogramma brassicae Bezdenko had the high relative abundance in the tested cropping systems. The Shannon diversity index (H') in intercrops was significantly greater than in corn monoculture. The calculated values of Morisita–Horn index for the predator’s species composition between intercrops were CMH ≥ 0.946 in 2016 and CMH ≥ 0.934 in 2017. In both years, the percentage of parasitized eggs and larvae of O. nubilalis in intercrops was significantly higher than in corn monoculture. The highest grain yield of corn and the lowest percentage of grain yield loss of corn were found in 8C: 2S intercrop.
    Discussion
Based on the resource concentration hypothesis, the lower density of O. nubilalis and the lower percentage of infested plants in the intercropping systems of corn and sunflower could be demonstrated by overlapping of the secreted volatile compounds of two crops that caused disruption in the host finding. Moreover, based on the enemies hypothesis, the higher attraction and conservation of predators and parasitoids in intercrops caused lower density of O. nubilalis than in corn monoculture. In this study, the competition for nutriants between corn and sunflower was also reduced with increasing of the corn rows between the sunflower rows; the percentage of grain yield loss of corn was reduced in 8C: 2S copmpared to other intercrops. Therefore, it could be concluded that 8C: 2S intercrop is the most suitable intercropping system for use in integrated management of O. nubilalis in corn fields

The two-spotted spider mite Tetranychus urticae Koch(Acari: Tetranychidae) is one of the most important and destructive herbivorous mites in fields and greenhouses, and its control is very important due to the wide range of its hosts.

    Materials and Methods

The sublethal effects of spirotetramat based on leaf dipping method were evaluated on demographic parameters of two-spotted spider mite in the laboratory conditions of 25±1 ºC ,60±5% RH and a photoperiod 16:8 hours (L:D). The obtained data were analyzed based on age-stage two sex life table theory.

    Results

All sublethal concentrations caused a significant decrease in oviposition period, total fecundity, longevity and total life span compared to control. Maximum and minimum means of longevity of male and female mite were observed in untreated and LC35 groups. Total fecundity varied from 18.12 (offspring/individual) in treatment with 35% sublethal to 57.71(offspring/individual) in control. The lowest net reproductive rate (R0 (was estimated at 11.95 (offspring/individual) at the highest experimental dose. The intrinsic rate of population increase (rm) was recorded as 0.22 offspring/individual/day in control and 0.17 offspring/individual/day in LC35 treatments, respectively. Mean generation time (T) was not significantly affected by different tested doses.

    Discussion

The results of this study demonstrated that sublethal dosage (LC35) of spirotetramat was effective against two-spotted spider mites

    Background and Objectives

Knowledge on the characteristics of insects immune system can play an important role in the adoption of biological control methods such as the use of entomopathogenic fungi. Insects with a strong immune system exhibit the development of infection.

    Materials and Methods

In this study, the immune responses of fourth instars larva of the potato tuber moth were investigated against two isolates of entomopathogenic fungi Beauveria bassiana includingFashand and 47 (isolated from the soil of the Fashand region and isolated from the Abr jungle of Shahrood, respectively). Concentration of 105 spores / ml of each isolate was injected to the larvae. Control larvae were treated with distilled water. After 3, 6 and 10 hours, the abundance of hemocytes was evaluated in treated larvae.

    Results

The results showed that after 3 hours the total number of hemocytes, plasmatocytes and granulocytes increased significantly compared to control. However, the abundance of these hemocytes decreased gradually after 10 hours post injection. 6 hours after injection, prohemocytes also showed significant decrease in numbers. The amount of enzyme activity of phenoloxidase was measured. The maximum activity of Phenoloxidase enzyme was in the isolates of Fashand and 47, respectively, in 3 hours after spores injection.

    Discussion

Recognition of hemocytes and study of the interaction of pathogenic agents with immune system of Potato tuber moth has been conducted for the first time and could be used as a basis for future investigation in the context of the feasibility of the biological control of this dangerous pest of potato with Beauveria bassiana

The cowpea weevil, Callosobruchus maculatus is an important pest of pulses seed, with ample distribution in tropical and subtropical regions. In this research, the effect of temperature and host plants on population growth of this pest was investigated.
    Materials and Methods
Effect of five host pulse including pea, cowpea, lentil, vetch and broad bean on development time of cowpea weevil was studied at seven constant temperatures: 18, 21, 24, 27, 30, 33 and 36 (±1 °C). Population growth parameters of C. maculatus were measured on five host species at 27 °C and at seven constant temperatures on cowpea. Some physical and biochemical characteristics of pulse seeds were measured and the correlation between them and some life history parameters of C. maculatus was examined.
    Results
Our research showed that the shortest development time was on cowpea at 33 °C and the longest one was on broad bean at 18 °C. The highest and lowest rm values were observed on cowpea and broad bean, respectively at 27 °C. A significant difference was observed in grain humidity, hardiness index, protein and starch content of various pulse seeds.
    Discussion
The life cycle of C. maculatus was greatly affected by quality of host plant. Differences over the development time may be due to nutritional content in pulses seeds. The grain humidity was another factor affecting seed quality and feeding of this pest. The highest longevity at low temperatures could be associated with lower metabolic processes. The thermal characteristics of C. maculatus were relatively influenced by different host plant seeds

    Background and objective

Cotton bollworm, Helicoverpa armigera (Hϋbner) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) is a cosmopolitan and polyphagous pest that attacks many plant species including cotton. One of the most important principles of the Integrated Pest Management programs (IPM) is use of non-chemical agents such as natural enemies (parasitoids and predators), and resistant host plant to control pests. Transgenic Bt cotton is one of the substitution ways of chemical pesticide used for control of this insect pest. Production of transgenic crops was a novelty in the method of applying host-plant resistance. Crops that are genetically engineered to express Bacillus thuringiensis toxin are planted in many areas.
    Material and

    Methods

In the present study, effect of transgenic Bt cotton, Coker cultivar, including cry1Ab was studied on biology and digestive protease activity of the bollworm. For bioassays, gut dissection and demographic studies, H. armigera were obtained from the Division of Entomology, Department of Plant Protection, College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, University of Tehran, Karaj, Alborz, Iran. The insects were held in the growth room on the condition of 25 ± 1ºC, 60–70 % relative humidity with a 16-h day length. Proteolysis using general substrate (Azocasein 2%) was assayed after some modification. In this manner, 10 µl enzyme extract and 50 µl Azocasein 2% (substrate solution) were mixed into 40 µl of the 20 mM Tris-HCl buffer pH 8.0 and incubated during 60 min. Protease activity was measured using specific substrate with some modifications. Trypsin- and chymotrypsin-like activities were assayed using 1mM BApNA (Benzoyl-l-arginine-p-nitroanilide) and 1 mM SAAPFpNA (Succinyl-l-Ala-l-Ala-l-Pro-Phe-p-nitroanilide), respectively.

    Result

The results illustrated that the second larval instar mortality in the transgenic cotton was 68 percent and in control cotton was 6 percent. Furthermore, larvae in different instars, in transgenic Bt, had significantly lower weight and longer life time in comparison with control. Several biological characters of both treatments including survivorship, development and weight were significantly changed. On the other hand, total protease, trypsin and chymotrypsin activity in digestive lumen, after the second, fifth and sixth larval instar in transgenic cotton showed significant reduction, respectively.

    Discussion

Coker cotton crop with cry1Ab, will have significantly negative effects in insect biology and digestive physiology during the pest life time and can be noticeable in management of important pests such as boll worm. Bt cotton can therefore be useful in an integrated pest management program, because it resulted in a reduction in the number of insecticide applications per season

    Background and objectives

Fopius carpomyiae Silvestri (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) is an egg and rare larval parasitoid of ber fruit fly, Carpomyia vesuviana Costa (Diptera: Tephritidae) in Bushehr and Khozestan provinces.

    Materials and Methods

In this research, firstly the synchronous cohorts of F. carpomyiae females were produced. Then the mated females (7-8 days old) were released singly into petri dish containing a ber fruit infested by a clutch of ber fruit fly eggs. Each female (n = 20) was observed continuously under a stereomicroscope while she remained in the patch and the time of onset and duration of all distinguishable behavioral events were recorded using an MP3 voice recorder.

    Results

The wasp females devoted a lot of time to oviposition (146.40 ± 8.80 sec; 47%), and probing behaviors (98.75 ± 2.27 sec; 31%), during patch residence time (313.2 sec). The foragers allocated the least times to the resting, walking and flying behaviors. The average number of oviposition on each fruit was 1.85 ± 0.15, the maximum and minimum durations of ovipositor insertions resulting in parasitism were 44, and 217 sec, respectively. Moreover, on average, the egg load of F. carpomyiae females was 29.4, and the percentage of parasitism was 39.20.

    Discussion

According to the results, F. carpomyiae females showed the proper exploitation of host because of its effective foraging behaviors and high percentage of parasitism

    Background and Objectives
Plant pathogens, insects and weeds contribute to more than 30% of crop losses annually. Toxic chemical bactericides have been extensively used to control plant pathogenic bacteria. These chemicals pose a health threat to humans and the environment and eventually lead to resistance of pathogens. Hence, breeding cultivars resistance to bacterial pathogens is a valuable and sustainable solution. Antimicrobial peptides (AMP) are a part of the immune system of all living organisms, including plants, to combat pathogenic bacteria. Hairy roots (HRs) system is a valuable tool to produce and evaluate the activity of AMPs in planta. The aim of this study was to produce a Dermaseptin B1 (Drs-B1) recombinant AMP in transgenic tobacco HRs using Agrobacterium rhizogenes and test its antibacterial activities.
    Material and
    Methods
The DNA encoding sequence of a Drs-B1 peptide of a frog was codon optimized based and synthesized in the pGSA1285 expression vector under the control of 35S CaMV promoter (×3). A gene cassette containing the Drs-B1 gene was introduced to tobacco roots by Agrobacterium rhizogenesis mediated transformation.
    Results
The transgenic HRs were confirmed by molecular methods. Antimicrobial activity of the protein extracts from transgenic HRs showed that the recombinant protein was able to prevent Pectobacterium carotovorum, Erwinia amylovora and Xanthomonas citri plant pathogenic bacteria growth. The anti-bacterial effects of Drs-B1 peptide against plant pathogenic bacteria were in the order of X. citri> E. amylovora >P. carotovorum.
    Discussion
The peptide present in transgenic DrsB1-expressing HRs clones inhibited devastating plant pathogenic bacteria growth, suggesting that DrsB1 retains its antibacterial activity in plant cells. The results of present study may open promising opportunities to produce transgenic plants expressing antimicrobial peptides resistance to plant pathogens
