More than 200 million people live today out of their countries, and the majority of them are originated from the third world countries while only a minority of them had the chance to be accepted in developed countries, where different mechanisms are used to open the doors only for well educated and elites coming from poor countries. Anyway, no matter where these populations are situated, their first concern after finding the elementary conditions of life is how to find a way to conserve or reproduce and even develop their original culture as a means to have their identities preserved. In recent years the melting pot theory shows more and more its appropriateness for analyzing the immigrated communities, this is in opposition to theories which argue that the reconstruction of communities in the host country is not a problem for their integration, but a path to their prosperity at least in the cultural domain. The art, in all its forms, especially in developed countries is one of the best ways to produce and reproduce the original cultures. In this paper the author, has based his argument on a theoretical framework on the art as a means of community construction identity, giving examples in Iranian and some other diasporic communities. Nevertheless the argument concerns about a risk of deviation and development of a sort of exotic approach to the others’ culture.

Narratology, as an academic discipline, derives mainly from three schools of thought and their corresponding languages – Russian, French, and English. As there is much confusion regarding the meaning of the key terms used in narratology − for example, narrative and narration − it seems necessary to clarify the meaning and scope of these terms. To this end and through a critical look at existing researches including those treating narrative from linguistics or semiotics point of views, firstly the key terms “narrative” and “narration” are defined; secondly, the shortcomings of the existing definitions are outlined. And thirdly, more comprehensive definitions of the two terms areintroduced.

David Mamet’s Oleanna (1992) is the most controversial play among his plays, including Sexual Perversity in Chicago (1971) and American Buffalo (1975), which both came as something like a shock. With Oleanna, the shock was completed; the play provoked many debates on political correctness and the sexual harassment. Many feminist critics attacked it for the seemingly misogynic theme supported by the play. After this first wave deflated, critics focused on other themes: power, language, and gender; now the play was interpreted as a clash between two sexes over power. One of the most Influential approaches has been McLeod’s suggestion that the narrow critical preoccupation with sexual harassment, political correctness and beleaguered masculinity in Oleanna had obscured what was in fact a far wider and more challenging dramatic engagement with issues of power, hierarchy and the control of language. This essay sees Oleanna from this viewpoint and tries to focus on the dramatic structure of the play itself, which is unique among the contemporary American plays. Structure of Oleanna, while seemingly related to American realism, reveals anti-realistic dimensions which is similar to Pinter’s work and the European dramatists. Mamet’s linguistic model in Oleanna through pauses, repetitions, and cuts is the instrument of retardation. In Oleanna, structure is in one sense Aristotelian, but Mamet through this language obscure Aristotelian model. Form and content, are inseparable: language is the subject of play; its uses and misuses. But language means dominance too. Also, gender becomes important during the play: Carol uses sexual politics to change her position in the hierarchy of power. Also I suggest that Oleanna, as Mamet said, is a tragedy on power. John and Carol’s battle is over more power; both of them are blind, and their recognition is when both fall; John beats his student and Carol ruins John’s wishes

This article discusses the impacts of introducing animators to acting skills on successful animation filmmaking. The necessity of acquaintance of animators with acting art is one of the most important issues which successful producers of animation film have considered, but limits and conditions of this acquaintance should be defined. Certainly, animator’s awareness of acting art is different from theater player’s awareness of this art and of course it should be so. In this paper, the author tries to depict the scope and type of animator’s awareness of acting art. Classification of acting in animation in two categories namely: “believable acting” and “interesting and attractive acting” have not only been accepted as a rule in animation, but also is used in defining boundaries of acting in animation comparing other arts. Nowadays, the necessity of acquaintance with acting in animation is one of the most fundamental discussions in production of animation films, but there are only a handful of complied sources in this regard. In addition, the author has tried to study the practical effects of acting on animation products by bringing opinions and views of some successful animators and individuals involving in animation art along with the theoretical discussion about acting issue. The methodology of this article is based on analytical comparison of the methods used in big animation companies in order to create a successful animation play. Conclusion of this article emphasizes on the necessity of paying attention to acting issue in new animations.

Focalization is a narratological element referring to the angle from which we see the events of the story. Besides, Jahn (1996) introduces the term “windows of focalization” in which it is as if narrator and focalizers open imaginary windows to the story world. Opening of these windows is always accompanied with devices. Accordingly, this article aims at analyzing the movie, The Hours according to Jahn’s model of focalization. The question which this paper concerns is: what are the signs or devices which cause the windows of focalization of the narrator switch? As a result, the findings show that the most important patterns of switching are: 1. Sounds including the music of the movie, sounds from nature or environment, sounds related to houses, sounds and voices of people, and sounds of clocks. 2. Cohesive symbols such as flowers, the novel, Mrs. Dalloway, cake, and so forth. 3. What characters say or do or show in common. 4. Other markers like titling.

The musical form can be studied on micro as well as macro structural level. On macro structural level, there are, in different musical cultures, some fixed forms which consist of the succession of several definite pieces. In ethnomusicological literature, these kinds of form are named suite or cycle, but in the case of the Iranian music and according to the vocabulary of the old treatises of music, one can call them nowbat. Nowbat is a very important form in different kinds of classical music in the Middle East, but one can find it as well in the popular music of this reagion, especially in Iranian culture. The majority of nowbats, in classical music and in popular music as well, follows the principle of generating successively the tension and the relaxation, although the direction of this succession is different in these two kinds of music. In any case, there are also some kinds of popular nowbat which do not follow this principle.

One of the main reasons of spreading the multimedia in the world is that of employing various arts at once. In fact “using” multi-arts are far ahead of “studying” multidisciplinary approaches. In spit of that, multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary studies are growing faster than any other disciplines. This growth requires the specialization of the issues which are studied under these approaches. As this, the current study narrowly focuses on considering the status of accents in drama and music. In music the accents of whatever kind are spaced out through time. However, in theatre and cinema we are faced with two kinds of accents, those spaced through out in time and those spaced through out in place. Dramatic actions whose accents lead to their emphasis are categorized in two views. In the first view, action in drama is taken as changing process which occurs along linear time. In this view, dramatist chooses some portions of this based on the given time of the performance. In the second view, the actions of drama are taken as periodic processes, taking place in cyclic time. In this perspective, the dramatist selects a number of such periods to present in the time of performance. These periods in music are seen from the smallest unit, motif, to phrase, phrase-group, movement and finally the piece itself. Comparative study of accents in music, drama and visual arts shows how the main constructive elements work similarly in the process of creation and perception of various arts. Considering different sources of musical and dramatic accents illustrate the variety of tools available for emphasizing different points of piece in the hand of their creators. Synchronizing the musical and dramatic accents is the next issue of this article. One of the simplest ways of treating musical, visual and dramatic accents is that of synchronizing them. Such synchronization makes the process of perception very reliable. In watching a movie or theatre a huge amount of data goes through the mind of the audience. In order to process such a huge data, the mind of audience has no chance other than finding a kind of periods to reduce the amount of data. Various elements are used to provide the mind for categorizing parts of the piece and finding periods including mood, internal condition, energy and structure. Each of those elements or a combination of them could provide the boundaries of each period. For instance, changing in the atmosphere of the stage can be used as an introduction of a new period. The interaction of musical, visual and dramatic accents with each other composes the main part of this study which leads to introducing a new diagram of categorizing the ways of their combinations in four possibilities including: parallel, diverse, counter-pointed and harmonic. Finally, presenting various issues regarding examination of accents in drama and music revealed that having more than one perspective in such investigations could provide deeper understandings

In Ta’ziyah ceremony, music is employed in two forms: 1. vocal music, 2. instrumental music. In fact, this is the Iranian music including various genres. Music and elegy singing are the most salient elements of Ta’ziyah. In this article, this type of music plus all its detailed features have been analyzed based on the theory of Stratificational Semiotics. Based on this theory, one can study all different strata of a multimedia text, which my consist of acoustical strata including verbal, musical, environmental sounds, as well as meaningful silence, in addition to visual strata such as line, image, and the like. Accordingly, in this descriptive-analytic research, Ta’ziyah is accounted as a text consisting of different strata which together compose a texture in which music is an important strata. Furthermore, the basic concepts of stratificational semiotics like text, texture, contextualization, decontextualization, the hierarchical structure of the text, etc., make the fundaments of this analysis.
