Given its strategic and geographical status in the Persian Gulf waters, Bahrain has been of particular importance since long ago. In 1820, England brought together the Bedouin Arabs of the south of the Persian Gulf who made a living through piracy and signed a treaty with them called the Perpetual Truce of Peace and Friendship. Britain’s excuse for doing so was to protect the security of the Persian Gulf; however, the truth was that it sought to consolidate its dominance over this region. In later periods, a number of other treaties were signed with Arabs under the pretext of fighting against slavery. At the same time, the British signed a treaty with the Shaikh of Bahrain, to which the Iranian government objected and, as a result, some conflicts were escalated between Iran and the rulers of the Persian Gulf region and the colonial British government. The British gradually separated the archipelago of Bahrain from Iran from 1820 and, eventually, in 1970, in the course of a referendum held by England, Bahraini people voted for the recognition or their identifyin a fully independent and sovereign state and, thus, the United Nations officially recognized Bahrain as an independent country. In this paper, the writers have tried to respond to the following questions: “When did Bahrain come into the Iranian sphere of influence” and “When did the British increase their influence in Bahrain?” Finally, they deal with the separation of Bahrain from Iran during the reign of Pahlavi King II. In line with the questions of the study, the authors propose the following hypotheses:” Bahrain belonged to Iran since ancient times, and a number of Iranian rulers, from Achaemenids and Arsacids to Buyids, Safavids, and Afsharids, ruled this land. The British government entered the Persian Gulf under the pretext of fighting the pirates and, since Bahrain was of great strategic importance, began to increase its influence in this region. This study was conducted following an analytic-descriptive method while benefitting from library sources, including a number of books, articles, and reports.

Kharg is one of the important and strategic islands of Iran. However, its significance is not merely limited to its place and influence in recent centuries. A study of the historical background of this island reveals that its geographical situation and natural conditions played some roles in people’s gravitating to it and its turning into a transit route for sea commerce. Moreover, one cannot ignore the active role and noteworthy share of this island in pearl hunting. Given the particular historical conditions of Kharg Island, this paper aims to examine the effects of this important and critical island on the political and economic changes in the Persian Gulf from ancient times to the Safavid period.

At the end of World War I, some major changes occurred in the political, economic, and social perspectives of the northern coasts of the Persian Gulf in Iran. The present paper examines such changes and portrays a new image of these coasts. Russia’s withdrawalfrom the First World War due to the 1917 Revolution, Germany’s defeat, and annihilation of the Ottoman Empire resulted in England’s rising as the supreme power in the region. Immediately after witnessing the scene free of its rivals, the British government decided to sign a treaty, known as the 1919 agreement, in order to gain control of the administrative, financial, and military affairs of Iran. However, this agreement failed due to massiveopposition from both the Iranian Parliament and foreign countries. Shortly before the end of the War, in order not to lag behind the victorious countries, Iran decided to participate in peace negotiations by dispatching a group of delegates to The Paris Peace Conference, 1919. Nevertheless, the efforts of the delegation were not successful and, despite their presence in the Conference, they could not participate in the negotiations. On the other hand, in the Persian Gulf region and its coasts, the repercussions of war showed themselves in the form of economic recession, the emigration of a great number of the tradesmen and businessmen of the northern coasts to the southern coasts of the Persian Gulf, and the shortage of food. Such devastating conditions, alongside oil extraction, led to a number of fundamental changes in the social and economic centers of Persian Gulf coasts.

Silk production and trade have a long history in Iran. Particularly, in the Safavid era and during the reign of shah Abbas I, through giving the exclusive right of silk trade to the king and the thriving of related industries, the economy of the country greatly flourished. Shah Abbas I intended to transfer the major part of the country’s commercial activities to the Persian Gulf for to some political and economic reasons. To accomplish this task, he expanded the political and commercial relationships of the country with Europeans and seized control of the Persian Gulf through deporting the Portuguese from its economic center or Hormoz. This marked the beginning of the expansion of the commercial activities of large companies in the Persian Gulf and, as a result of this huge accomplishment, Bandar Abbas, in particular, experienced great development and prosperity for several decades.

Presently, weather forecastingis of great importancefor future planning with regard to safeguarding against natural and human phenomena. This is because, in the light of accurate planning, potential damages could be reduced. The present study aims to evaluate the tourism climate of one of the islands of the strategic region of the Persian Gulf, Qeshm, through using the Geographic Information system (GIS). In order to identify the regions with comfort, optimal, and discomfort (too hot) climate conditions and determine the comfort level, a number of criteria including temperature in Celsius and percentage of average relative humidity were examined. In this project, in order to evaluate the tourism climate conditions based on Temperature-Humidity Index, the required data were collected from 12 synoptic weather stations in Hormozgan Province over a 10-year statistical period. Then the mean temperature and average percentage humidity of each month during these 10 years werecomputed, and the final output was calculated using the Bioclimatic comfort Index in the GIS environment. All the processes and the data analysis procedures in the GIS environment were evaluated based on the Inverse Distance Weighted (IDW) Model in geostatistics. IDW is a type of deterministic method for multivariate interpolation with a known scattered set of points. The assigned values to unknown points are calculated with a weighted average of the values available at the known points. Lastly, in order to create the final map, the ultimate output was classified into five separate scales for people’s thermal sensations. The results of the measurement of temperature-humidity indices demonstrated that the central and western parts of Qeshm Island suffer from discomfort conditions for human health during most days of the year. The only months which offer optimal climate conditions for tourism include January, February, and December.

Reefs are structures which are built as a result of accumulation of the skeletons of marine species, particularly coral species secreting calcium carbonate, in the form of coastal heights. On the shores of seas and oceans and under proper conditions, some uneven masses of a biological origin are formed as an assemblage of coral polyps, algae, sponge, and shells of marine invertebrates held together by calcium carbonate. Coral reefs are formed in calm and clear waters, with a salinity of 27-40 ppt, at a temperature of 25-30˚ C, with ample light and oxygen. Geographical distributions of coral reefs are found in shallow tropical waters between 30˚ N and 30˚ S latitude. The optimal temperature for the growth of corals is 24-30˚ C, and the optimal depth is about 10 m. However, the corals of the Persian Gulf can withstand a temperature of about 18˚ C and even lower in winter and a salinity of 48 ppt. Coral bleaching is a disease which results from climatic changes, different types of pollution, and stress from human activities in corals’ natural environment and devastates them. For example, in September 2002, because of the bleaching of corals in the Strait of Hormuz and Oman Sea, a great number of the corals degraded. The human stressors imposed on the corals in the region mainly included industrial activities, excavation and land reclamation, oil leakage, etc. Moreover, fishing activities, particularly those involving the use of industrial nets and industrial chain networks, and drainage of cooling water from desalination machines and power plants function as stressors to the corals and the organisms of the natural sea environment, which results in the bleaching of corals all over the region. The limestone masses consisting of coral reefs are also called reef barriers.
