According to Sunni and Shia exegetes of the Qur'an and based on the verse 184 of Chapter al-Baqarah, travelling, falling ill and weakness lead to exemption from fasting and, therefore, permissibility of breaking the fast. However, there is a discrepancy among Muslim scholars with regards to the degree of illness, distance of travelling, the manifestation of "who are able to do it", prohibition or permissibility of fasting by the aforementioned individuals, the obligation or allowableness of breaking the fast, and the necessity or non-necessity of observing the lapsed fast. Shia scholars agree unanimously that breaking the fast in the above circumstances is mandatory, not a matter of free choice. However, Sunni scholars have differed over this issue. A few of them are of the opinion that it is mandatory to break the fast while most of them maintain that it is a matter of personal choice and that a Muslim individual is free to either break his/her fast or keep it. This article seeks to study the verse 184 of the second chapter of the Quran in light of the opinions of scholars from the two major branches of faith. Relying on exegetical works from various Shia and Sunni scholars, it offers a comparative analysis of the current viewpoints on the subject-matter.

Islam's view of women is not just a gender-based perspective, rather many Quranic verses reflect and depict women as being on a par with men in different matters such as submission to God and faith, knowledge and intellect, piety and happiness which they can attain through righteous acts. It is important to explain the dignity of a woman and her personal and social status through proper interpretation of the verses. What actually casts doubt in this matter is the term 'virtue' whose mundane meaning is different from its reality with Allah. In this research, verses appertained to intrinsic and acquired virtues have been examined by analytical and descriptive methods from the perspective of Allamah Tabatabai, the great Shiite commentator, and that of the Sunni commentator (Fakhr Razi). The findings of the present research is that men are not superior to women neither in intrinsic nor in acquired virtues as both of them can reach the summit of virtue by means of faith, knowledge and righteous acts. In any case, the criterion for merit and virtue rests in the human essence which is common to both men and women.

The principles (qawa'ed) of exegesis play a very important role in accurate interpretation of the Quran. One of those principles is to look at the circumstantial context and indications that can help the exegete determine the meanings of the verses.  One of the many types of indications is to look carefully who the verse is addressed to and what the particularities of the addressee are. In some verses of the Quran, God, the Exalted, addresses His prophet with specific words. Some interpreters of the Qur'an have interpreted the verses concerning the Prophet (S) in a way which is not congruous with his status.
This study was conducted by applying analytical descriptive method to examine comparatively whether or not Tafsir al-Kashshaf and Tafsir al-Mizan have considered the said principle (qa'edah). Keeping in view the verses in the question, the findings of this research reveal that Zamakhshari has not paid attention to this principle since he has interpreted the Quranic verses in such a way that the Prophet's infallibility has been distorted. On the contrary, Allamah Tabatabai has paid due attention to this principle and has made sure to argue that the Prophet (S) is immune to all kinds of mistakes and sins.

The instant descent or revelation of the Quran is one of the contentious and important issues among Muslim exegetes of the Quran. Allamah Tabatabai and Ayatollah Ma'refat are among the Qur'an researchers who have argued differently and drawn out different conclusions. Ayatollah Ma'refat considers the beginning of the prophetic mission and the beginning of the revelation as two different times and that, in his view, the first verse was revealed three years after the prophetic mission in the month of Ramadan. He, therefore, concludes that the verse 185 of Chapter al-Baqarah and verse 1 of Chapter al-Qadr make reference, somehow, to the start of the revelation of the Quran. However, Allamah Tabatabai referring to these two verses of the Quran as well as stressing on two kinds of existence (exoteric existence which is available to the audience and esoteric existence which was revealed to the Prophet (S)) concludes that the verse 185 of Chapter al-Baqarah and the verse 1 of Chapter al- Qadr signify instant descent of the Qur'an on the hearts of the Prophet (S) in the Grand Night (Laylat al-Qadr). Given the fact that both of the opinions refer to the apparent meanings of the verses and in view of the criticisms directed towards these two views, they can neither be rejected decisively nor can they be substantiated.

English abstracts As for the nature of "tafsir" (exegesis), "ta'wil" (interpretation), "dhahr" (outward meaning) and "batn" (outward meaning), there are different views. According to Allamah Tabatabai, tafsir is the science of explanation of the Qur'an, the sacred scripture of Islam, in order to explore the purports and intentions; ta'wil is the elucidation of the objective and external reality of something existing in the protected tablet (lowh mahfuz); dhahr is the exoteric meaning and batn is the esoteric meaning, a meaning beyond the apparent meaning. According to Abu Zayd, tafsir is to explore the outward meaning of the Quranic verses with the help of textual and lingual sciences; ta'wil is to explore the esoteric meaning or a meaning deeper than the outward and historical meaning of the text. Allamah Tabatabai's and Abu Zayd's opinions are different in cases like the scope and limits of exegesis and nature of interpretation. In some cases, however, their opinions are identical. For example, both of them consider dhahr and batn or the meaning and its implication as mere concepts. Likewise, they believe that ta'wil, dhahr and batn do not apply to some verses.

The Holy Qur'an has made reference to the formation of man's behavior and conduct based on his personality. According to it, individuals with good and balanced character are essential prerequisites of a healthy society. The findings of this study reveal that, when studying personality, modern psychology focuses only on biological –physical factors putting aside or ignoring man's psychological and mental aspects. Naturally, this leads to a vague and obscure image of a sound and healthy personality. Hence, the Holy Qur'an not only reveals the exact constituents, dimensions and features of a healthy personality and its balanced criteria but it also adopts a balanced and moderate way between man's material and spiritual aspects in a bid to nurture a balanced personality.
