    The present study investigated the possible relationships between multiple intelligences, critical thinking and language proficiency level of Iranian English as Foreign Language (EFL) learners. The participants of the study included 117 intermediate young - adult EFL learners from ILI language i n- st i tute in Tehran, Iran. The participants were invited to complete MIDAS and Critical thinking que s- tionnaires. To assess the parti cipants’ English language proficiency, they were also asked to take a version of PET test. The results of the Pearson correlations showed that there was a meaningful rel a- tionship between multiple intelligences and critical thinking. A meaningful relations hip was also found between the multiple intelligences and the English language proficiency level as well as the critical thinking and the English language proficiency level of Iranian EFL learners. In addition, the results of the multiple regression showed that both multiple intelligences and critical thinking could predict 45.2% of the English language proficiency level of EFL learners. Our findings also indicated that the multiple intelligences and the critical thinking had a significant contribution to p redict the English language proficiency level of Iranian EFL learners.

    The present study investigated the effect of updated localized material s on the English language achievement of undergraduate students of Political Science in their English for sp ecific purposes (ESP) courses in Iran. Sixty - five male and female undergraduate students (19 - 26 years old) from two universities in Iran participate d in this study. They were divided into two intact classes consisting of 32 and 33 students , respectively , a s the experimental and control group. After ascertaining their h o- mogeneity, conducting the pretest, and doing the treatment, which included exposing the exper i- mental group to authentic updated material s , both groups took the posttest. The results of statis tical analysis indicated that the use of localized materials enhanced the achievement scores of the participants in the experimental group significantly. The data was triangulated through an attitude questionnaire and interview. The findings could have pedagogical implications for ESP learners and instructors.

    This study sought to probe the role of input flooding through listening tasks on the uptake of simple present tense and the present progressive tense among pre - intermediate English a s Foreign Language ( EFL ) learners. To comply with the objective, an experimental design was adopted. 55 pre - intermediate learners participated in the study. They were randomly divided into one control group, non - flooding group (NFG, N= 17), and two experim ental groups including pre - task input flooding group (pre - IFG, N= 18) and post input flooding group (post - IFG, N=20). Pre - IFG received pre - task flooding while post - IFG received a post - task input flooding. To probe their improvement , the r e- searchers admini stered a posttest on grammar to all three groups . A one - way ANOVA was run and the findings revealed that the three groups were homogeneous at the onset of the intervention. The results demonstrated that both pre - IFG and post - IFG were equally effective on t he uptake of the ta r- get grammati cal forms and that the two groups outperformed NFG. The findings have implications for EFL teachers and materials developers.

    Poetry translation involves cognition, discourse, and action by and between human s and textual a c- tors in physical and social settings. The aim of this study was to find out to what extent the non - native translator of Nizami Ganjavi’s “Leili and Majnun” could preserve the poetic imagery in its English translation. To this end, an innovative taxonomic model, which could investigate the D e- scriptive, Figurative and Symbolic aspects of poetic imagery, was presented as a three - dime nsional theoretical framework. The information adopted from the content analysis of the source text revealed that the visual imageries occurrences in descriptive category, metaphor and then allusion in figur a- tive and love in symbolic classification were th e most applied poetic imagery in the source text. The descriptive statistics obtained from the tabulated data of this research indicated that in general James Atkinson could preserve the Persian poetic imagery as well which seems very high for a nonnative translator in introducing Persian poetry to other nations. However, the only weakness was his ignorance of the mystical thoughts of Nizami, which needed a hermeneutic understanding of Sufism and Mysticism, which have a deep root in the history and culture of Iran.

    The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of textual enhancement types on English as Foreign Language ( EFL ) learn er s ’ grammatical awareness of simple and complex structures. A nu m- ber of 104 learners from Ayandegan Institute, in Tehran, participated in this study. To homogenize the samples, the researchers administered a placement Michigan Test of English language to the pa r- ticipants . The participants were then divided into four groups, two experimental groups and t wo co n- trol groups. The two experimental groups went through enhanced forms of the texts containing si m- ple and complex structures, while the two control groups experienced unenhanced forms of the texts containing simple and complex structures. Before and af ter the treatment, a pretest and a posttest were run and the two reading texts with enhanced and unenhanced versions were used. The f indings showed that the textual enhancement had significant effect on learners’ grammatical awareness of simple and complex structures. There was also a significant difference between male and females’ scores in simple and complex structures.

    Translation of the Holy Quran can be difficult for translators in terms of accuracy and translatability. Sometimes translators fail to render the Quranic thoughts because of the lack of language features in target languages. This results in an unfavorable interpretation. One of the challenging aspects of translating Quran is reference switching as rhetorical devices, which are widespread in the book due to the aesthetic aspects of the Arabic language. Rendering rhetorical devices may lead to misinte r- preting the Quran as the target languages might not have the same context as Arabic. The ongoing research discovers several rhetorical problems in the English translation of the Quran by Abdel - Haleem in terms of power and solidarity relations on the basis of Brow n and Gilman personal pr o- noun description. This study provided a brief introduction and review about “tenor” – interpersonal relationship among the text – that is a part of Hallidayan functional linguistics, which was the framework for data analysis in this study and the pronouns of power and solidarity as rhetorical d e- vices. This study also investigated the analysis of the six selected and randomly chosen samples and their English translations regarding reference switching as a rhetorical device in the tenor of the ta r- get texts. The results of the study revealed that the translator was not successful in switching the re f- erences amongst the pronouns in English translation and the tenor in target text was also different from the source one.
