Upon the continuing spread of English as the global language, there have been dissenting voices, albeit not resounding ones, from Muslim scholars lamenting the hegemony of Western patterns of thoughts and the relegation or denigration of Islamic ideology, values, and culture in education in general and English Language Teaching (ELT) curricular and pedagogic thinking in particular. Nonetheless, despite the current qualms, the practice of reviving language teachings based on Islamic sources and the socio-religious concerns of Muslim communities is still infrequent.Feeling the necessity of designing educational materials, I narrate an experience of composing nursery rhymes targeted at introducing body organs and their divine rights to young English learners through deriving inspiration from Islamic references like the Sublime Qur’an and Imam Sajjad’s Treaties on Rights (Risalat al-Huquq). I hope the modest experience would be inspirational for other language teachers and materials developers interested in carving out identity and ownership in foreign language teaching.

Critical English for Academic Purposes (CEAP) is a site where English for Academic Purposes (EAP) and Critical pedagogy are combined. Through CEAP, participants in academia can question the status quo for better education. Few studies have addressed the critical issues in the context of Iranian universities, which take account of both authorities and practitioners. The present study investigated the perceptions of students, professors (practitioners) and policy makers (authorities) in terms of the three prominent modules in critical pedagogy in English for Academic Purposes (EAP) in terms of textbooks and instruction in the Iranian universities, namely power, English hegemony and ideology. Data was collected from three Iranian universities. A questionnaire and semi-structured interviews were used to collect data. Chi-squares and ANOVA procedures were employed to analyze the quantitative data. The interviews were analyzed through thematic content analysis. We investigated whether there was a significant discrepancy in perspective among students, professors and policy makers regarding decision-making power, English hegemony and ideology in the context of Iranian EAP instruction. Results of the quantitative and the qualitative analyses for the module of power showed that based on the participants’ perspectives, neither the students nor the professors enjoy power to be active in the policy making. Regarding English hegemony, the participants believed that it does not exist in the EAP textbooks. With reference to ideology, they believed in the absence of a certain ideology in the Iranian EAP textbooks and instruction.

Faustus has a long history in European literature although its origin is obscure. David Mamet, in a modern version of the old legend, presents a new perspective on the issues of power and truth. Michel Foucault, the influential post-structuralist historian and philosopher of the 20th century, gives a novel insight into the nature of power relations and its manner of operation within human societies. In this sense, Foucault posits that power and knowledge are the same; moreover, power and resistance coexist in every social interaction. The current study aims to investigate the power relations in David Mamet’s Faustus in a Foucauldian framework. Faustus’s model of the periodic power offers a rigid paradigm to explain the mechanism of the world. Human will and resistance have no place in Faustus’s ideology. However, the study shows how Faustus gets disillusioned as he becomes aware of the hidden power relations functioning around him. It concludes that the significant role of truth and knowledge in power relations leads to the emergence of confession, reward, and punishment: discourses which entangle the individual in a complex web of power and resistance.

Recognizing the cultural political dimensions of  ELT curriculum and instructional materials and the necessity for their contextualization, this qualitative study explores how codes and themes of Language and Literature of Resistance presented in learning by design pedagogy and framed in trilogy of mujaawarah (group gathering), yuhsen (the best possible), and muthanna (quality pair) elaborated by Fasheh (2015), may pave the way for joining foreign language learning and Iranian Islamic Revolution’s pedagogy, pedagogy of resistance, in ELT curriculum development and implementation besides provoking literacy. The findings in this study demonstrated that the ELT curriculum, as marinated in the language and thought of resistance, can bring meaning and life to the act of language learning by providing Iranian language learners with literacy of resistance which invites emancipation from indifference and routine life. This type of literacy, which esteems individual reflections and meaning making, inspires learners to pursue the improvement and transcendence within themselves and their milieu by growing their insight and engagement (commitment to their being).

This study was an attempt to investigate the effect of information-gap tasks on field-dependent (FD) and field-independent (FI) EFL learners’ reading comprehension. For this purpose, 61 learners out of a total number of 120 existing intermediate learners studying at a language school in Tehran were chosen through their performance on a piloted sample Cambridge Preliminary English Test (PET) and subsequently on the Group Embedded Figure Test (GEFT). Overall, there were 33 FD and 28 FI learners undergoing the information-gap task treatment. Furthermore, an independent samples t-test was run on the mean scores of the two groups on the reading section of the sample PET, thereby proving that they were homogeneous at the outset in terms of their reading. Another sample PET reading section was administered as the posttest of the study after each group was exposed to 15 treatment sessions. At the end of the instruction, another independent samples t-test was run on the mean scores of the two experimental groups in the posttest with the results indicating that there was no significant difference between the two groups’ reading skill.

The present study aims to focus on Alexander Pope’s controversial mock epic, The Rape of the Lock, to investigate the effects of Repressive and Ideological State Apparatus on the formation of characters’ identities in this 18th century poem. It seeks to analyze the ideological atmosphere in The Rape of the Lock and discusses the complexities of notions such as materialism, virtue, womanhood and conciliation in characters’ actions, words and belief on the basis of Louis Althusser’s theories of interpellationand Repressive and Ideological State Apparatuses. It analyses the details of the poem to determine Alexander Pope’s views as a social critic who tries to question the ideologies of his time by his satirical portrayal of the superficial social interactions, the corrupted political system and the process of women’s identity formation in this poem. The analysis reveals that Pope manages to resist being interpellated and avoids judgment of the characters by depicting the ambiguous nature of the sociopolitical ideologies and by resorting to the ideals of art instead.
