Approaches to the Contemporary Arab Poetry

Today, Arab contemporary poetry has unveiled its new face to the world. Regarding the poetic structure, in addition to the deconstruction of deconstructing the diction of the poetry that occurred one or two decades after the Persian poetry and novel application of terms and words, the breadth of imagination, Arab poet's potentials in creating images have made the Arab poetry different from its old structure. Semantically the Arab contemporary poetry has also taken a new conceptual orientation. Besides, descriptions of the nature and composing love poems, attention to the female genderas one of the most common themes of Arabic poetry, and the occurrence of new issues and trends have changed the thought and cogitation behind the Arab poetry. World War I & II, the Palestinian resistance movement, six days of Arab fighting, Colonialism and the Arab’s familiarity with the West and consequently the fundamental changes in lifestyle and the Arabs attitude toward the world are all factors that altered Arab poetry. The main consequence of these factors in Arab poetry has been a spirit of hopelessness and disappointment that pervades the poetry of this period as the poems of this period were called “abasiyye” (i.e. doleful poems). BadrShakerSayyab, Nazik Al-malaekeh, NizarQabbani, AbdolwahabBayati, Adonis, boland Al-heydary and Mohammad Meftah Al-fytvry are poets whose poems are analyzed in the present study.
