Estrangement Themes in the Poetry of Yahia al-Samavy

This study is aimed at exploring the themes of estrangement and his constant longing for home in Yahia al-Samawy’s poetry. A theme that has re-invented, and presented itself in most of the poet’s work, influenced by his life and personal experiences. The study attempts to identify and define this theme as a form of art through the poet’s work, discovering its motives, and how it could be employed as a method to communicate a message within a poetic story. It puts under the spot light the poet’s preference and desire to include this theme in its varying forms more than any other theme in his work. If the theme of estrangement was a fruitful tree then the sub-themes of sadness and death would serve as its branches, and the fruits would carry the colors of black and white, they would taste nostalgic, and feel like love, loss, sadness and the far seas, migrating birds, a lone tent in the desert, and a wondering Sinbad. All combined, the tree, its branches and fruits would work as one to deliver the poem’s ultimate melody, while conversing the poet’s story.
