THE SOY BEAN EFFECT ON THE PREMENSTRUAL SYNDROME CONCERNING ITS PHYSICAL٬PSYCHO AND BEHAVIORAL EFFECTS IN FEMALE STUDENTS OF SEMNAN UNIVERSITY DORMITORY

Background and Aims

Premenstrual syndrome is the cyclic appearance of physical، psycho and behavioral syndrome which occurs at luteal phase in the menstrual cycle، so that it can effect academic performance، and social and family relationships. This study has been conducted in a one-blind clinical trial to determine the effects of soy on premenstrual syndrome in female students of Semnan University Dormitory.

Materials and Methods

In this study after completing of a questionnaire during 2 consecutive cycles، 90 female students (age 18-24 years) has been selected with moderate-severe premenstrual syndrome who had necessary parameters to enter the study، then the subjects were randomly divided in two case-control groups، 40 person for each of the case and control groups respectively. The case group received soy consisted in a biscuit that provides a total of 50 gr. ISP، containing 50 mg isoflavone (IS). The control group took placebo that were identical in appearance and taste to the soy biscuit but it contained ordinary flour instead of isoflavone for two menstrual cycles. The data were collected by using a questionnaire، Mens daily calendar، and symptom scoring tables.

Results

The study showed that the means of scores for total physical symptoms of premenstrual syndrome between case and control groups had significant difference during first and second treatment cycles (p<0/01). It also showed that the means of scores for total psychological symptom of premenstrual syndrome between case and control groups had significant difference only during second treatment cycles (p<0/01). The means of scores for total behavioral symptoms of premenstrual syndrome between case and control groups had no significant difference during first and second treatment cycles (p>0/05). The means of premenstrual syndrome duration had significant difference between case and control groups during second treatment cycles (p<0/01).

Conclusion

In seems that soy bean can reduce physical and psychological signs of premenstrual syndrome during menstrual cycle.
