The Study of Core Vocabulary Usage in Persian School Dictionaries

Abstract: It is assumed that primary school Persian core vocabulary is used as basic words in textbooks، story books and different dictionaries for the children in this age. Therefore، in this article the usage of a corpus of words (N=137) is studied in three Persian school dictionaries. In this regard، different characteristics of these dictionaries and their entries are mentioned. Next، that some various theoretical criteria were formulated based on lexical and lexicographical viewpoints. Then it is concluded that most school words can be found in dictionaries، meanwhile، according to different criteria which are based on lexicological and lexicographical principles، we can prove the importance of their presence in dictionaries. To compare these criteria، different theoretical discussions such as synonymy، substitution، frequency of occurrence and definition have been considered.
