Survey the levels of anxiety in patients undergoing Coronary Artery Bypass Grafts surgery

Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting Surgery as one of the most common surgery methods accompanied by mental complications such as anxiety and depression that have poor outcomes. It seems that in these patients, preoperative anxiety is at the highest level, and a week later, will be higher than normal. This study was conducted to determine the level of anxiety in these patients. In this cross-sectional study, were examined the anxiety levels of 100 patients undergoing CABG, in Ahvaz Naft hospital, 2011, selected by convenience sampling method. Data was collected through self-reported using "Spielberger Anxiety Inventory" to measure anxiety scores before and post-surgery and analyzed with SPSS20 software, descriptive statistics and t-test. Anxiety mean (S.D) before and 1 week after surgery were respectively, 38.86±12.23, 36.34±10.86. There was a significant difference between anxiety scores before and 1 week after surgery (P=0.014) that indicated rate of anxiety was reduce on 1 week after surgery. Patients waiting for coronary artery bypass surgery should be routinely assessed for anxiety before the procedure, and interventions to prevent or reduce anxiety should be provided.
