The view of librarians of public libraries regarding librarian's professional ethics

The aim of this study is to determine the importance of librarians` familiarity with professional ethics and also the effective factors on observing the professional ethics and the way of giving priority to proposed professional ethics factors. The present study is applied which has been carried out using survey method. The study consisted of the librarians of public libraries of Hamedan Province which are 97 people in number. The data have been collected by a questionnaire made by the researcher. To analyze the data, descriptive and inferential statistic's methods have been applied. The librarians of public libraries are highly familiar with professional ethics. The professional ethics factors are also prioritized as: responsibility toward society, users, job, colleagues, organization, themselves and other specialists. No difference between the attitudes of librarians with librarianship course of study and other people who are non-librarians was seen. There is no considerable difference between the attitudes of librarians of public libraries at the importance of familiarity with professional ethics factors on the base of gender, but regarding the level of education and job experiences of librarians, there are many differences. Originality/value: This study can help Iranian Public Libraries Foundation and Iranian Library and Information Science Association compile comprehensive charter of professional code of ethics.
