" Hamm" of Joseph (AS) in the Light of Traditions of the Household of the Prophet (AS)

Abstract:
The different theological sects interpret and paraphrase the verses of Quran about the stories of prophets (AS) based on their beliefs on the infallibility of prophets (AS). Shi`a commentators also, adhering to the teachings of the Household of the Prophet (AS), follow the same method based on the most perfect infallibility of the prophets (AS).
Therefore, considering the verses that superficially damage the infallibility of the prophets (AS), they have chosen an interpretation that does not hurt the stability of the infallibility status of divine prophets (AS). Sura Yūsuf (Joseph), verse 24 is among the verses that many commentators have disagreed about its interpretation and the explanation of the meaning of “Hamm” of Joseph (AS). A number of these interpretations damage the infallibility of Joseph (AS) - some of them are based on unstable and weak traditions - and deserve analysis from theological aspect and others have been criticized since two different bounds ascribed to two “Hamm” used in this verse or because of inconsistency with the context of the verses and the type of usage of “lo la”. In this battle of opinions, it is difficult to reach an acceptable explanation of the verses, but beyond these words, one of the traditions seems to be a useful guide to approach the reality.
