Anti- inflammatory like effect of Salvia officinalis L. essential oil in male mice

Abstract:
In many researches, the antidepressant, anti-microbial, antinociceptive and antioxidant effects of Salvia officinalis L. were evaluated. In this research the anti- inflammatory like effect of Salvia officinalis L. essential oil was studied on the inflammation induced by xylene in the right ear of male mice. In order to In the experimental groups, 0.03 ml of xylene was injected subcutaneously in the right ear of mice weighing 20-25 g. In some of the experimental groups, 30 minutes before xylene injection, Salvia officinalis L. essential oil %5, %10, %20 and dexamethasone 15mg/ kg were administered intraperitoneally. Dexamethasone was used as an anti-inflammatory corticosteroid. The inflammation were measured according to the weight difference of a plug with 6mm of thickness in treated and nontreated ears. After treatments, white blood cells of animal’s serum were counted.
The results showed that Salvia officinalis L. essential oil has anti- inflammatory effect that is compable with dexamethasone.
