Evaluation of the effect of Cuminum cyminum extract pre-treatment on increased permeability of blood-brain barrier caused by stroke in rat

stroke is most important neurological disease and the third cause of mortality after heart diseases and cancer in the elderly. Despite many efforts for the treatment or understanding the pathophysiology of stroke, an effective treatment has not been found yet. The Cumin plant with the scientific name "Cuminum cyminum" is used for the treatment of diseases. This study was conducted the effect of cumin on reduce the damage of blood-brain barrier resulting from stroke.
Methods & Materials: In this experimental study, the male rats were divided in 5 groups of 6. Groups including sham, control and 3 experimental groups that were received 25, 50, 100 mg/kg of cumin extract orally for 30 days. 2h after the last gavage, control and experimental groups were underwent middle cerebral artery occlusion surgery to induce stroke and measure the stability of blood-brain barrier.
Concentration of Blue Evans in the damaged hemisphere (right hemisphere) in the control group had no significant difference compared with the doses of 25 and 50 of cumin extract. But dose of 100 showed a significant difference compared to the control group as Blue Evans in the damaged hemisphere decreased (P Pre-treatment with 100 mg/kg of cumin extract reduces damage of the blood-brain barrier resulting from stroke.
