A Review to Evaluate the Solubility Parameter of Polymer Compounds

Abstract:
In the field of polymer compounds the solubility has a significant importance in many aspects such as material selection and environment concerns. Solubility parameter has been used as a term to determine the solubility in polymer systems (by the use of the old solubility law that like dissolves like) . In general methods for determination of solubility parameter divides into two groups: pre and post methods. Pre methods are more reliable as they have the advantage of prediction of solubility before compounding. Among the present methods viscometery, swelling and inverse gas chromatography (IGC) have the most application. Hence, in this review paper we have discussed and compare these three methods as well as their advantages and disadvantages in polymer compounds. In spite of some ambiguity that IGC has in computation of solubility parameter of polymers, it is still one of the most important methods to investigate the solubility in a polymer system.
