The Relationship of Narrative Genre and Deceleration with the Functions of Lyric Language (A Case study: Khorshid and Mahpareh)

Lyric is known as the most common literary genre in Persian literature. This genre includes many branches dealing with various human emotions. One of the most important components of lyrical literature, i.e. romance, provides an appropriate ground for structural studies, because it deals with lyrical language on the one hand, and with principles of storytelling on the other. Safavid's romances are among significant ones in this respect. “Khorshid and Mahpareh” is a relatively long and neglected romance written during the Safavid era. Its perfect plot composed of four sub-plots persuaded the authors of this study to extract the patterns of lyrical language and to determine the relation between narrative genre and deceleration. According to the six functions language, when the narrative genre focuses on the narrator, (), the emotional function of language increases, and when the actants are focused on, (), the poetic function of language increases. On the other hand, deceleration is caused by description, mental function, and interpretation. Outdoor description has a direct relationship with the poetic function of language, and mental function − including whisper, woes … − is directly related to the emotive function. Induction is very light and appears in interpretive and educational sections.
