A Stylistic Study of the Role of Derivative Compounds in the Creation of Rhyme Mathnavi

Message:
Abstract:
Rumi is one of the peaks in Persian literature that, along with sense orientation, occasionally depicts language features in his poetry. This poet has the potentiality to create beautiful and eloquent speech using a variety of techniques. One of these techniques in injecting flexibility into speech is inventing new combinations of derivatives used as rhyme. Scholars and researchers mostly deal with the matter of meaning in Mthnavi. No noteworthy study has been carried on regarding the role of derivatives in the creation of rhyme. This study aims at investigating this aspect of Rumi’s poetry. Rumi has abundantly used combinations as rhymes. His goal seems to have been motivating the audience by speech, creating rhythmical speech, and filling up the empty spaces of rhymes. Affixed compounds, pseudo-affixed compounds, shortened compound nominative adjectives, adjectival compounds, and infinitival and hybrid combinations have been analyzed as to their role in creating rhyme. Derived compounds used as rhyme make Rumi’s speech eloquent and distinguishes his style from his contemporaries.
