Defending Baghdad as the main goal of the invasion of Iraq to the West of the Country on 31 Shahrivar 59

Iran, with its western neighbor, Iraq, has common borders in a straight line about 1336 kilometers from Dalamperdagh up to Faw port. Kermanshah province is a mountainous area located between the Iranian plateau and the plains of Mesopotamia and it is covered with the Zagros Mountains and peaks around. Heights in border regions of Kermanshah province, dominates the plain of Mesopotamia provides very favorable conditions for infiltration and offense against Iraq's major cities, especially the capital Baghdad. By observing the political map of the province, it is realized that the borders of Naftshahr and Qasr-e Shirin, are a convex borders of iran and could be intriguing militarily and politically to Iran. For these reasons Iraq invaded Iran, on 22 September 1980 (30th Shahrivar 1359), from the border towns of Qasr-e Shirin and Naftshahr in order to build a protective shield against Baghdad. Examining the military geography of Kermanshah and Ilam provinces, the article has investigated issues such as invasion of Iraqi army and its positions during the war in the west of country and military operations of Islamic Republic of Iran, and the extent to which Iran-Iraq military and political goals have been reached. Western regions also examine the Islamic Republic of Iran to Iraq.
