Agricultural Terms in Mohammadieh Dialect

Mohammadieh, aka Barzan Mohammadieh, is a district in Naein, in Isfahan province. The Mohammadieh dialect is a branch of Naeini dialect. The latter family itself is categorized under the central dialects and belongs to the south-eastern family. Throughout its history, agriculture, particularly cultivating cotton and wheat, has been an important occupation in Naein. Still, some traditional skills and tools, as well as relevant words and expressions, are used in Mohammadieh. In this paper, the terms and expressions related to agriculture and irrigation, types and titles of farmers, agricultural implements, units of measurement, weeds and vermin are listed and the terminology used by the native people is analyzed. Due to the industrialization process, a serious threat to the traditional techniques of agriculture as well as to the dialect, collecting the words and grammatical features in order to preserve this unique dialect which is a part of the Iranian culture, should be the primary task of the scholar.
