Formulation and Investigation of Pyrotechnic Flares as a Source of Infrared Radiation
Author(s):
Abstract:
The threat of helicopters, military and civilian aircrafts by IR-guided missiles (heat seeking missiles) has always been a major one.One of the most effective methods to overcome this threat is an attempt to decoy the missile by the flares that are released by the aircraft (the target of the missile). Certain compositions have the capability to form a pyrotechnic flare formulation that radiate in IR region and are able to counter an infrared homing (heat seeking)in surface to air and air to air missiles and decoy them. In This paper, investigated of sources of infrared radiation in consideration decoy of heat seeking missiles and intends to demonstrate the research carried out in formulation of pyrotechnic flares from different constituents and radiations of their burning. Many samples were formulated and quality of their burning was tested. Then, burning test was performed on the prepared formulations to observe if the IR and UV radiations are present or absent. The test was carried out by the equipments and the spectra were also determined. Finally, preferred formulations, based on the availability of materials, the high burning rate and the least UV radiation, were selected.
