The last years of the reign of Khosrow-Parviz and his adventures with Shahr-baraz

Abstract:
Shahrbaraz is one of the most famous commander of Khosrow-Parviz who fought with the Roman emperor (Byzantine) and won great victories. He captured Jerusalem and sent the true cross (one Christians believe that Jesus was crucified by it) to Ctesiphon (imperial capital of Iran) . He then occupied Egypt and Libya in 619 AD. So after several centuries he extended Iran’s territory as great as the Achaemenid era. But his relation with Khosrow was strained soon. In this article we have tried to investigate the causes of this rupture in their relationship. Considering historical narratives on the relation of Khosrow and Shahre-baraz it is deduced that the Shahnameh narration is more comprehensive and more believable. According to Shahnameh the major factor of schism between them was the accumulation of wealth by Khosrow and expensive taxes that result of his continual and barren wars that their costs were paid by the people. Shahre-baraz has been fighting for several years for Khosrowbut when he saw people suffering and Khosrow,s tyranny and dictatorship and rejecting the peace demands of Herakle, He thought that staying in Khosrow’scamp is not reasonable. He converted to Christianity and decided to overthrow Khosrow’s government .
