The Four Mystical Journeys in the Light of the Quran and Traditions

Message:
Abstract:
When explaining their views on the four mystical journeys, Muslim mystics are used to refer to the Quran and traditions. They are of the view that they can find considerable references in the Quran and traditions for it. In what follows, the author has enlightened the prospect of those four journeys through the examination of the related verses of the Quran and traditions. Those journeys are not proposed in the Quran and traditions in detail, nonetheless the very spiritual journey is emphasized therein. A few verses have mentioned the four journeys; however, more verses and traditions have only justified some parts of the journeys. Nevertheless, mentioning ideas such as "veils of light and darkness", "stations and states of the wayfarers", and "requirements and products of each journey" all suggests that the four journeys have religious motifs. The immense influence of religious teachings on the Muslim mystic's approach as to the four journeys from one side, and the need for explanation of their principles on the matter from another side, call for the issue to be examined independently.
