Examining Critical Media Literacy Status in Iran's Education System

Abstract:
In today's world, media have become one of the main components of human societies, so educating media literacy is one of the basic requirements for everyone, especially young audiences. The main purposes of media literacy training can be known as access, analysis and production of communication in various forms of media and the critical consumption of media content, the acquisition of skills in information management, the recognition of possible effects on the use of the media and the increase of the potential for the conduct of democratic discourse in the international community. If we consider media literacy as the science of regulating relationships between the audience and the media based on internalized norms, we should not ignore its position in governments’ media policies. In this research, the documents of the Ministry of Education as one of the most important cultural and educational institutions were studied and analyzed based on the principles of critical media literacy program and its components and documentary-analytical method. The results of the research show that the most attention in the documents of the Ministry of Education, among the components of critical media literacy, is only on a component of critical perception and understanding, and no policy has been developed to improve the component of communication ability.
