Abstract:
Positivistic conventionalism in ethics refers to a viewpoint whereby it is possible to discover ethical values and duties through convention. This view is supported by Western and Muslim scholars.
The reasons they have presented for their conventional beliefs, include rational and narrative proofs (verses and narrations). The study of these reasons seems to be necessary due to their relativistic implications and harmful cultural consequences emanating from the promotion of this belief. Therefore, in the present research, we have studied some of their textual proofs, namely, Quranic arguments. In addition, through analyzing the divinely-revealed verses, we have extracted the standpoint of the Holy Quran regarding the epistemic validity of convention in terms of exploring ethical duties and values. A close study of the Quranic proofs presented by the positivistic ethical conventionalists reveals that none of them can prove their claim.
Furthermore, an analysis of the verses of the Holy Quran shows that according to the verses, conventional understanding and behavior cannot be regarded tantamount to discovering ethical values and duties.
