The structural model of perfectionism, psychological well-being and marital adjustment

Abstract:
Aim: The purpose of this study was to explain the structural model of perfectionism, psychological well-being and marital adjustment.
Method
This study utilized a descriptive correlational design and the statistic population of the study included of all residents of the Karaj city with the quantity of 1614626, of which 500 married persons who were eligible to enter the study were selected for sampling, through a multistage sampling. Research tools were Frost Multiple Perfectionism Scale (1990), Ryff Psychological Well-Being Scale (1989) and Spanier Dyadic Adjustment Scale (1976).
Results
After removal of 5 outlier subjects, structural equation modeling was used to analyze the data of 405 subjects. Results showed that psychological well-being mediate the relationship between positive perfectionism included personal standards (β=0.229, P0.01) and organization (β=0.064, P0.05) with marital adjustment. Also, psychological well-being mediate the relationship between negative perfectionism included concern over mistakes (β=-0.212, P0.01), doubts about actions (β=-0.212, P0.01), parental criticism (β=-0.257, P0.01), parental expectations (β=0.141, P0.01) with marital adjustment.
Conclusion
Negative perfectionism and positive perfectionism have a different impact on psychological well-being and marital adjustment. As expected a compatible marriage lasted for a long time and is satisfactory for both spouses, hence it is recommended that, in the continuation of marriage, positive and negative perfectionism and psychological well-being should be considered subsequently.
