Evaluation the effect of Fingolimod on the number of brain plaque in multiple sclerosis patients before and after treatment at MRI

Abstract:
Background
Several treatments have been proposed to control Multiple Sclerosis (MS). Fingolimod is the first oral medication for the disease that was approval by Food and Drug Administration American (FDA) since 2010 and is produced in Iran from October 2013. The aim of this study was evaluation of the effect of fingolimod on the number of brain plaque in multiple sclerosis patients before and after treatment at Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI).
Methods
This study was analytical and the brain plaques of 64 patients with MS was determined with MRI at the beginning and end of the study (after 12 months of using fingolimod). The software of SPSS 22 was used for statistical analysis.
Results
The number of active plaques and number of active plaques in the form of rings on MRI in patients with multiple sclerosis significantly increased after treatment (p0.05).
Conclusion
Consumption of once-daily fingolimod 0.5 mg after 12 months can not prevent from the rise of active plaques on MRI in MS patients.
