An Investigation on the Influence of Sidewalks in Pedestrian Accidents

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of sidewalks on pedestrian accidents in Borujen city. The present research is a descriptive-surveyed study. The statistical population of this study is Traffic and Driving Experts and the Municipality of Borujen. In order to collect data, 50 researcher-made questionnaires were used. A total of 967 accidents occurred in Borujen from 2012 to 2015. 9.49% of accidents occurred in Borujen city and 2.5% of accidents resulted in death. 5.17 % of accidents involved pedestrians, of which 1.94% resulted in death and 9.5% of pedestrians died. 4.28% of the wounded and 7.41% of the dead were from pedestrians in the total number of accidents in the city of Boroujen; out of a total of 560 injured, 159 were pedestrians and from 24 dead, 10 were pedestrians in Borujen city. In fact, 7.41% of the dead in the city of Boroujen are pedestrians; as a result, the city of Boroujen suffers from adverse pedestrian traffic accidents. The results show that the width of pavement, roughness in pavements, stopping of vehicles and motorcycles, and occupation of pavement by merchants and shopkeepers on pavements, have effects on the occurrence of road accidents with pedestrians at a significant level of 5%. Therefore, sidewalks have played an important role in pedestrian traffic accident.
