In addition, the share of other countries in capturing medal during Olympics would be considered in this paper. As it is important to assess the degree of competition and monopoly power in the economic markets, it is also important to study the degree of competition and the relative strength of countries in the Olympic Games. To fulfill the objectives of this study, k-firm concentration ratio, Entropy and Herfindhal-Hirschman indices are used as measures for assessing the monopoly power exercised in Olympic Games. The results indicate that the monopoly power is pretty high, but has dropped over time. In other words, few countries have dominant powers, but over the years, their monopoly power has been declining, and the competitiveness of other countries has increased over time. Furthermore, the findings of this study indicate that there is a positive relationship between Human development index and the success rate of countries in the Olympic Games.
