Improving Student's Understanding of How to Subtract Mixed Numbers (Experience based on Lesson Study)

Abstract:
Purpose
Nowadays, scientific and applied research has been increasingly considered to the implementation of curricula. Research development especially collaborative research within the school and classroom is one of the concerns of practitioners and policy makers and program executives. «Lesson Study» is a method to modify the teaching method and a practical pattern for a consistent review of mental patterns and participatory reflection on the practice of educational brokers. The present research implemented to improve fifth grade student's understanding from how to subtract mixed numbers.
Method
Lesson Study method has used in the present research. Studied population included fifth grade students (two classes 14 and 24 people) of Nor-al-Hoda girl's Nursery School of Birjand City. In this study Quantitative and Qualitative data were used. Qualitative data in this research include active monitoring of two math classroom of fifth grade in research-based study process, narrative interviews with teachers to understand the impact of research-based study in training improvement and enrich learning, study lesson plans, self-reflection notes of teachers, external observer comments and notes and comments of students fifth grade about research-based study effect on their learning amount and understanding from how to subtract mixed numbers and Quantitative data of this study include math test results of fifth grade before and after researchbased study implementation.
Findings: Results show positive effect of research-based study on student's learning. Creating a suitable atmosphere for cooperation and using the experience of colleagues in classrooms can help to form modern methods to present training materials and facilitates training and learning.
