Representation of Social Harms Threatening Family Institution in Iranian Movies of 1990s and 2000s

Abstract:
This paper intends to analyze the contents of movies in terms of social harms threatening family institutions, and discuss their changes during the 1990s and 2000s. The statistical population of this study covers all the Iranian movies which were screened in the 1990s and 2000s. The total number adds up to 1,500 movies. The sample population of this research including 1.5 percent of the statistical population, consist of 20 movies. To choose the sample population, the movies were listed according to their box office in each year, and then a systemic sampling was conducted for each year. A questionnaire with closed-ended questions was used to gather data and descriptive and deductive statistics to analyze the data. Then, the hypotheses and questions of the research were tested by applying quantitative content analysis. The findings were analyzed, emphasizing on the reflective approach from social representation theory and social control theory. Review of the Iranian in movies in the 1990s and 2000s indicate that the highest number of screened norm breaking behaviors and socially harmful conducts comprised theft and larceny, depression, lying, divorce and ethical issues, respectively
