Educational and Communication Usages and Advantages of Graphic Novel & Comic Journalism

The purpose of this paper is to review the educational and communication usages and advantages of graphic novel and comic journalism. Based on the findings of this study conducted through desk and library method, graphic novels known as “new media” have turned into educational tools in classrooms across the world especially with respect to subjects such as English language, natural sciences, social sciences, history, literature and art. Graphic novels can serve as an important part of every standard syllabus development and can facilitate understanding of educational topics even for those with reading problems. Graphic novels can also be used in communication, advertising and marketing areas to achieve objectives and be highly effective due to being image-oriented. In spite of advantages and great potentials of graphic novels such as being helpful for ordinary people and also those with reading problems in learning, having influence on development of analytical and critical thinking and “new literacy” and even improving traditional literacy and being helpful in understanding of sophisticated communication, advertising and marketing topics, this effective tool has not been yet used in the educational system and communication areas of our country. While recommending to get acquainted with graphic novel and comic journalism as well as understanding its importance and its usage and advantages, the educational system and communication area of our country are urged to apply
