Abstract:
Background & Aim
Cardiovascular diseases are the most common cause of death in the world. Despite numerous pharmacological treatments, coronary artery bypass grafting surgery is still known as the first and best treatment choice for these patients. Fear and anxiety are the most prevalent psychological complications of patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting surgery. It seems that social support is a factor affecting these two variables. Hence, the present study was conducted to assess the correlation of perceived social support with preoperative fear and anxiety among the patients undergoing elective CABG in 2015.
Materials & Methods
Among the elective patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting in the special departments of Imam Ali Hospital in Kermanshah, 100 patients (age: 55.80 ±2.9 yr) were selected as subjects. Data were collected using questionnaires of individual characteristics, perceived social support of Sherborne-Stewart, coronary artery bypass graft scales (BGFS) and Spielbergers. The Spearman correlation test was used to examine the relationship between variables at the significance level of 0.05.
Results
Social support outcomes (57.78 ± 10.4), pre-operative anxiety (51.11 ± 5.8) and fear (57.77 ± 7.7) were shown. There was an inverse and significant relationship between perceived social support and anxiety level (r = -0.3). There was also a significant and inverse relationship between social support perceived variables and fear (r = -0.2).
Conclusion
The results of this study indicate the importance of perceived social support for decreasing the amount of fear and anxiety in these patients. Therefore, identifying the patient's support resources and promoting it, is necessary. Supportive nursing care can improve mental health of patients.
