A New Approach to the Principle of Applicability and Comparison in Relation to Equivocation (Ishtirāk), Allegory (Majāz), and ‘Allāma Ṭabāṭabā’ī’s Opinions

The principle of “applicability and comparison” (jary’ wa taṭbīq) is one of the key principles in understanding the Qur’an, which paves the ground for the Qur’an’s public and comprehensive guidance in all times and ‘Allāma Ṭabāṭabā’ī is known as the reviver of this principle in contemporary era. What sounds important about this principle is the analysis of this principle and since evidence has a key status in the principle of equivocation and allegory, it’s relation to the discourses of equivocation (ishtirāk) and allegory (majāz) is important; because it has an important introduction for finding out the status of evidences in understanding the Qur’an.  The present article is written with a library method and through study and analysis of the written works and given the related traditions in this field and ‘Allāma Ṭabāṭabā’ī’s viewpoint, it undertakes to divide this principle into portions. Further on, with respect to the association they have with the discourse of equivocation and allegory, the evidences of the principle of jary’ wa taṭbīq with respect to its gist of meaning are set as the subdivision of shared meaning; and the relation of the evidences with the phrases of the verse is considered to be of the rational allegory type.
