Comparative Analysis of Varieties of Vocabulary Signification Changes in the Interpretation of al-Tabayan and al-Moharrar al-Wajiz

Language, as other human phenomena, is subject to change over time. Among the various components of language, vocabulary changes more than other components in terms of semantic implications. In interpreting the verses of the Qur'an, the interpreter's attention to these changes can provide more correct meanings to the verses for the audience. The present study deals with analyzing the role of these changes in the interpretation of al-Tabayan and al-Moharrar al-Wajiz via a descriptive-analytical method and applying the interpretive views of Sheikh Tusi and Ibn Attiyah. The results of this study indicate that the appropriation of signification, the generalization of the implication and the transfer of signification, are important forms of change in the meaning of the Quranic words that both commentators have paid attention to. Sheikh Tusi is more likely to enter such discussions than Ibn Attiyah. In addition, in many cases Ibn Atiyya's lexical analysis is influenced by Sheikh Tusi. Referring to the Qur'an and the affirmation of Arabic poetry and words are among the interpretive sources of both commentators in many lexical analyses.
