A Comparative Study of Tafsir al-Kashshaf and Tafsir Al-Mizan with a View to Addressees Particularities

The principles (qawa'ed) of exegesis play a very important role in accurate interpretation of the Quran. One of those principles is to look at the circumstantial context and indications that can help the exegete determine the meanings of the verses.  One of the many types of indications is to look carefully who the verse is addressed to and what the particularities of the addressee are. In some verses of the Quran, God, the Exalted, addresses His prophet with specific words. Some interpreters of the Qur'an have interpreted the verses concerning the Prophet (S) in a way which is not congruous with his status.
This study was conducted by applying analytical descriptive method to examine comparatively whether or not Tafsir al-Kashshaf and Tafsir al-Mizan have considered the said principle (qa'edah). Keeping in view the verses in the question, the findings of this research reveal that Zamakhshari has not paid attention to this principle since he has interpreted the Quranic verses in such a way that the Prophet's infallibility has been distorted. On the contrary, Allamah Tabatabai has paid due attention to this principle and has made sure to argue that the Prophet (S) is immune to all kinds of mistakes and sins.
