Abstract:

"baraka(h)" is one of the key concepts in the Qur'an and the Bible, and it has a clear and frequent presence in the culture of Muslims and other people of the Book ('Ahl al-kitāb); however, due to the familiarity of this concept, we rarely pay attention to the depth of its meaning In this paper, we derive the meaning of this term from its earliest usage in the Afro-Asian and Semitic languages. After that we use the methods of historical linguistics, such as semantics and historical etymology to pursue the meaning of this term from Afroasiatic and Proto-Semitic to the Qur'anic-Arabic. With this study we can understand the meaning of this Qur'anic word and its derivatives in its cultural context more deeply.
